  Letter from the Editor...

Dear Folks,

This month we're examining what happens when we crave the approval and acceptance of others.  What lengths will you go to to win the approval of others?  Will you deny your Lord?  We learn early in life to fear others, but that desire to please is a snare to our soul.  Fear of others keeps us from obeying our Lord.  We can overcome and learn to trust our Lord to give us His approval and love which far surpasses that of mankind.

Plus, Joanne Lowe writes about overcoming the chaos of life.  She knows that our Lord brings peace that is sufficient to meet all our needs.  When things are not going well, turn to Jesus.

Let's get started with this wonderful song, "In the Presence of Jehovah," sung by Damaris Carbaugh.  Just click on the start arrow to play.  Visit her website at:  http://damariscarbaugh.com/

The Believer's Mission...

"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy."

1 Peter 2:1-10

OVERCOMING THE FEAR OF MAN

"The fear of man bringeth a snare; but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe."  Proverbs 29:25

When did you learn to be fearful of others?  Was it from the bully who harassed you back in elementary school?  Maybe it was the first time someone laughed at you for a wrong answer or a fouled basketball shot in gym class.  You soon learned to avoid situations that might lead to ridicule.  People in our lives have taught us that we must be careful of others or suffer consequences.

The Bible teaches us that the fear of man brings a snare.  How so?  Think about what happens when we become afraid.  We protect ourselves.  We avoid situations that might create conflict.  Our emotions range from anger to feelings of powerlessness.  Over time, we become fearful to disagree, fearful to be ourselves, fearful to separate ourselves, fearful to admit we're Christians, fearful to serve our Lord...  We become victims.

One of the best examples in the Bible of someone who fears others is surprisingly, Pontius Pilate.  Now Pilate was a powerful man.  He was the Roman governor of Judea during the time of Jesus.  We remember him as the one who allowed Jesus to be crucified.  John, a disciple of Jesus, tells the story of Pilate best:

"Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?

They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law.  The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:  that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which He spake, signifying what death he should die."  John 18:29-32

In this passage, Jesus has been brought to Pilate after being questioned by Caiaphas the high priest and by his son-in-law, Annas.  Pilate sought to release Jesus back to the Jews, who adamantly resisted the idea.  You see they already had purposed in their hearts to kill Jesus, but the only one who could lawfully order his death to be carried out was Pilate.

Pilate too questioned Jesus to determine if He was indeed the King of the Jews.  With his neck on the line for ordering the death of a possibly innocent man, he had to discover why the Jews had delivered Jesus to him.  Look at how Jesus responds...

"Pilate therefore said unto Him, Art thou a king then?

Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king.  To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth.  Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

Pilate saith unto him, What is truth?  And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.  But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the Passover:  will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas.  Now Barabbas was a robber."  John 18:37-40

Pilate had made up his mind to release Jesus, but the Jews refused to accept Him.  They would rather have had Barabbas, a thief.  When you compare the two, it is truly astonishing that they would rather see Jesus brutally killed; Jesus who had healed the sick and lame, Jesus who had raised the dead, Jesus who forgave sin, Jesus who wept for the city of Jerusalem and its people.  But this too was part of God's plan.

After Jesus had been scourged by the soldiers who placed a crown of thorns on His head and a purple robe across His shoulders, Pilate tried again to persuade the crowd.  He told the Jews that he found no fault in Jesus.  In response, they shouted all the louder, "Crucify Him".  Finally Pilate ordered them to take Him away and crucify Him themselves.  Here's their response:

"The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; and went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou?  But Jesus gave him no answer.  Then said Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me?  Knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above:  therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him:  but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend:  whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.  And it was the preparation of the Passover, and about the sixth hour:  and he said unto the Jews, Behold your King!"  John 19:7-14

What happened to Pilate?

"When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person:  see ye to it."  Matthew 27:24

Pilate was a victim of the fear of man.  He feared the Jews would start a revolt or that he would be reprimanded by the Emperor because of his action, especially if there was an uprising.  He found it easier to give in to the demands of the Jews rather than to do what he knew was right.  How justified he must have felt when he could claim that he personally found no fault in Jesus.  Certainly Pilate is forever remembered as the one who condemned Jesus to death.

Let us be reminded again that the Bible teaches us that the "fear of man brings a snare."  Fear is a tool that Satan uses against us.  Unfortunately, it is a very effective means of keeping Believers from obeying our Lord.  The late Del Fehsenfeld Jr., said in his book, Ablaze With His Glory, "Whenever we substitute other things for God's approval, we will end up ensnared in the fear of man (p. 90)."

What are some of the snares??

*The need to be accepted by others

*The need to have the status associated with a position or title

*The need to show off how many possessions we have

*The need to compete with others

If you are experiencing jealousy, an unwillingness to be criticized, resentful if you are misunderstood or not taken seriously, can't admit you don't have everything in control, or are discouraged and depressed with feelings of being unloved, then you are in bondage to the fear of man.  These insecurities we all struggle with indicate roots of pride and self-centeredness.

*Fear keeps us from doing what God calls us to do. When we are fearful of unpleasant consequences, we become very silent.  We are often more willing to disobey our Lord than suffer reproach for doing what is righteous.

*Fear of ridicule keeps us from witnessing to others who need to hear the Word of God.

*Fear of reprisal keeps us from speaking truth in love to the wayward one.

*Fear of persecution keeps us from holding authorities accountable.  Fear keeps us from being close to our Lord, for surely it signifies a lack of trust in Him.

Rather than fear people, we should fear God.  He alone is righteous and holy and has the power over us that we believe others have.  Remember what Jesus said to Pilate:

"Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above..." John 19:11a

When we worry more about what people think, than what God thinks, we are living a life of bondage.  We will be forever swayed by those who possess the power to hurt us.  Are you attached to Jesus Christ strongly enough that you can withstand the demands of the unrighteous?

Confess your sin to our Lord and ask Him to cleanse you of the need for acceptance and approval by anyone but Him.  Ask for help in overcoming your fear of man.  Ask Him to strengthen your relationship with Him, that you may be a more devoted servant and love Him more than all others.

MUSINGS... From the letter to the Hebrews

"Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

But exhort one another daily, while it is called To-day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

While it is said, today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

For some, when they had heard, did provoke:  howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.

But with whom was he grieved forty years?  was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?

And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?

So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief."  Hebrews 3:12-19

"Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them:  but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it."  Hebrews 4:1-2

"Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight:  but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."  Hebrews 4:11-16

Fear Can Ruin a Good Time

Years ago my husband and I took time away from our busy jobs for a weekend fishing trip.  Our destination, a popular fishing lake, came highly recommended.  Arriving late at night we set up our new tent, using our headlights to guide us.  With our camp ready, we went to bed, vowing to arise early to launch our borrowed canoe into the lake for a morning of bass fishing.

The alarm on my husband’s watch was jarring after a restless night in unfamiliar surroundings.  I wasn’t ready to get up while the darkness of night was still upon us.  However, my husband couldn’t wait to fish, so I reluctantly made myself ready as best I could in the dark.

Unaware of the nature of our surroundings, we made our way to the water’s edge using our flashlight to guide us.  My husband quickly launched the canoe into the water and tied it to the mooring stake.  After loading our gear, it was time to set off.  I was a little nervous, fearful of tipping the canoe over and dumping us into the depths of the lake.

I’m not a swimmer, but I usually handle being on the water easily if I wear a life preserver.  This time was different.  As he paddled away from the shore, it was obvious there was no light to guide us.  My husband was calm, seeming to know where he was going, and unaffected by the absence of light.  I was beginning to panic.

The sound of the paddle dipping quietly into the water should have been relaxing.  Yet I began to sweat, and my heart started to pound.  I lost all sense of equilibrium because I couldn’t tell where the horizon was.  All was dark and black.  I understood then what is meant by not being able to see your hand in front of your face.  Nausea rose in my throat and my anxiety was acute.  I begged my husband to return to shore.  His calm assurance that all was well did not help.  I wanted off that boat!

As I fussed, I didn’t notice at first the now visible shapes of tree stumps in the water, or the lessening of the inky blackness of night.  Dawn was beginning. The light was subtle, not particularly noticeable at first, but growing brighter with each moment’s passing.  I began to get my bearings and to relax.  Then I began to chuckle, for we weren’t far from shore after all.

Dipping his line in the water, it was soon obvious that the deep depths I had imagined in my fear amounted to only a couple of feet.  The level of the lake was down due to drought.  Light had revealed the truth about our surroundings, dispelling my fear the darkness had fed.  With the coming of the dawn, I was hopeful that our weekend fishing excursion would be a success after all.

Moral of the story...

How silly it is to be afraid of the dark.  Our Lord is able to deliver us.  He has already won the victory over Satan who brings darkness to the minds and hearts of mankind.  Jesus came that we might be redeemed from Satan.  He purchased us with His blood.

"The night is far spent, the day is at hand:  let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.  Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.  But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof."  Romans 13:12-14

Whenever we give in to our fears, we demonstrate our need for the light of Jesus.  We show others that our faith is small and our trust is weak.  Overwhelmed by the darkness, panic rises; we have taken our focus off our Lord and Savior.  We begin to believe the terrors of darkness are more powerful than our Lord.

This little story reveals much about how light works to dispel the darkness.  Little by little the light comes, until finally it completely overtakes the darkness.  Jesus in all of His glory will one day overtake the darkness forever.

"But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.  Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day:  we are not of the night, nor of darkness.  Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.  For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.  But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.  For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ."  1 Thessalonians 5:4-9

We have forgotten that He who commands the sea and the wind by His word has the power to overcome the darkness.

"Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you.  Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you:  for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.  While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light."  John 12:35-36a

He has given us the Holy Spirit to comfort us and He has given us His Word so that we will know the Truth and not be deceived.  It is enough.

Trust Jesus.

"I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness."  John 12:46

In the meantime, while we wait for His coming, believers can spread the light of God's Word and we can be a light to others by our testimony.

"But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:  in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.  For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.  For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."  2 Corinthians 4:3-6

Do not stay in the darkness, blinded to the truth.  Pray and ask Jesus to save you if you have been walking in darkness, in bondage to Satan.

"And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.  But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God."  John 3:19-21

Peace In The Midst Of Chaos

By Joanne Lowe

“Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4: 4, 6, 7 King James Version

We live in a world that is full of chaos. It seems like we just get one problem solved and another one worse than the last one hits us. Our lives are filled with crowded schedules and so many demands on our time that we find it difficult to read the Bible or take time to talk to Jesus. Because the cost of living is so high, often both parents have to work to pay the bills and put food on the table. Our cars break down which brings an unexpected expense and once again we are faced with another crisis and we don’t have the money to fix the car. There are times when we become a little desperate and wonder if we will ever have peace in our lives.

There are so many people having marital problems, people with broken hearts, financial difficulties, and children who have become rebellious, disobedient and disrespectful to everyone. How can we ever find peace in the midst of all this chaos? There is only one solution to this escalating problem of chaos, and His name is Jesus! He is the only one who can bring peace, a lasting peace, in this world of confusion. When we are burdened with what seems to be a situation that is impossible to fix or conquer, it is then that we need to cry out to Jesus for help.

It doesn’t matter what chaos this world is in or how many deadlines we have, Jesus can bring peace to any situation and to our hearts if we will but call upon Him and then get out of the way and allow Him to fix it. So often we are guilty of asking Him for help but as soon as we say “Amen” we start worrying about the situation again and try to find a solution. Jesus not only brings peace to our heart and to our circumstances; He is our peace. What a privilege to not only be Loved by the Saviour of the world, but to have this lasting peace in our hearts. If you have confusion and turmoil in your heart, give it to Jesus and let His peace fill your heart.

GRANDMOTHER'S SCRAPBOOK

"Inspired by great-grandmother's scrapbook, compiled before 1918."

Faith

By Maud Frazer Jackson

What if I say...

"The Bible is God's Holy Word,

Complete, inspired, without a flaw...

But let its pages stay

Unread from day to day,

And fail to learn there from God's law;

What if I go not there to seek

The truth of which I glibly speak,

For guidance on this earthly way.

Does it matter what I say?

What if I say...

That Jesus Christ is Lord divine;

Yet fellow-pilgrims can behold

Naught of the Master's love in me,

No grace of kindly sympathy?

If I am of the Shepherd's fold,

Then shall I know the Shepherd's voice

And gladly make His way my choice.

We are saved by faith, yet faith is one

With life, like daylight and the sun.

Unless they flower in our deeds,

Dead, empty husks are all the creeds.

To call Christ, Lord, but strive not to obey,

Belies the homage that with words I pay.

  HOME SCHOOL TIPS

Developing a Physical Education Program for the Homeschool Student

Did you know that exercise improves learning and memory?  So says a study from 1999 by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.  If it works for mice, doesn't it make sense that it works for humans?  Okay, so this isn't new news today, but it is relevant because we've watched our kids become tied to computers and video games for hours on end.  The consequence is kids who don't read and don't play.  They are totally addicted to the adrenalin rush of the gaming world.  It's time to get them outside and involved in real life.

Beginning your day with a twenty minute workout is a great idea!  I like to think it wakes up the brain, gets the blood flowing to oxygenate the body and the brain, and burns off the doldrums.  If you want your kids to be alert, awake, and interested, don't start your morning with computer and video games or TV.   Develop an exercise routine that gets them moving.  Choose a Christian exercise DVD or just turn on some rousing Sousa marches.  In the process of exercising, kids will also enjoy a little music appreciation.

Do you remember when you couldn't wait for recess?  Plan some real fun for the kids by adding play equipment to your back yard or travel to a nearby park for play time.  If you don't have play equipment, make your recess breaks fun with improvised races, skating, bicycling, walks, jogging etc.  The idea is to get them outside and moving, using muscles, improving coordination, and learning new sport skills.

For the younger set, teach them songs with lots of motions to act out.  A rebounder is a mini trampoline and is a perfect attraction to get them moving around.  Some of the easiest ways to incorporate PE into your routine is by playing games.

Be sure to document your PE program.  Keep a daily log of activities and the time spent performing PE activities.  Count outside playtime during free times as well.  Also include any "learning by observation" activities such as sports workshops or ballgames you attend in your log.

During the day, keep them going with low sugar snacks such as carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc.  Leave the fruit for when stomachs are empty, or it will cause bloating.  Encourage them to drink lots of water to keep the body hydrated.  Plan snack time for mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

Determine progress with your own sports day program.  You can plan for quarterly events or seasonal events.  It's even more fun when you include homeschooling friends.  You will need a good stop watch for timing races, a couple of colorful flags, ribbons for prizes, and a whistle.  You can make your sport flags with a bright, solid color scarf stapled to a smooth stick, pole, or long dowl.  Plan a schedule of events such as races, long jumps, jumping rope contests, callisthenic exercises, and even an improvised dance routine.

Most importantly, let us be reminded that in the course of our PE program, we must also teach our children fair play, good sportsmanship, and self-discipline.  The Bible teaches us:

"For bodily exercise profiteth little:  but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come." 1 Timothy 4:8

This Scripture should encourage us to train our children to exhibit a good testimony of their love for Jesus while they participate in sports.  Teach them how to implement the Golden Rule as they play with others.  This is especially important for the older kids who have seen and heard pro-ball games where some behaviors and lifestyles would be displeasing to our Lord.  Part of our responsibility as parents is to nurture good character traits in our children.

However good our intentions are to exercise and get outside, it doesn't really become an exercise program until we make it a habit.  That takes some effort and discipline on our part as homeschool teachers.  Let's make a commitment to be faithful to implement our PE program and to carry it through our school year.

THOUGHT PROVOKERS

Love of Pleasure

--excerpt by the late Del Fehsenfeld Jr. from his book, Ablaze With His Glory

"We are a pleasure-crazed generation.  There seems to be no limit to the sacrifices we will make for the god of pleasure. We are driven in mad pursuit of pleasures--vacations, television shows, VCRs, find dining, sports events, entertainment, hobbies, sensual pleasures, magazines, books, music--anything to titillate our senses and make us feel good. This god is never satisfied.  Every time it is fed, it craves more.

This idol has even found a home in Christendom.  Often the church that draws the biggest crowd is the church with the most dynamic entertainment, a star-studded lineup of celebrity speakers, the most expensive sports complexes, the most comfortable pews, carpet, and air conditioning, and the most alluring schedule of activities for every member of the family--aerobics classes, square dancing, quilting parties, roller skating parties, bowling and softball leagues, and of course, lots of church dinners and picnics.

Whatever happened to taking up our cross and following Christ?  Whatever happened to preaching and programs that discipline the flesh and built the spirit?"

"Our primary purpose in life is to be holy and to bring pleasure to the heart of God. Furthermore, genuine lasting pleasure is not to be found in any created thing, but only in the presence of God:  "In Thy presence is fulness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore," Psalm 16:11."

TIP OF THE MONTH

Baking soda is a wonderful product to keep around the house!  Use a cupful in the bath to soothe sunburn, bug bites, soften the water, and help to remove body oils. Sprinkle it in your shoes as a deodorizer.  Or use a small amount on your hair to remove the buildup from beauty products such as hairspray.  Just rinse and shampoo as usual. Baking soda is a good remedy for indigestion, and makes a terrific toothpaste when mixed with a small amount of water to form a paste.
