  Letter from the Editor...

Dear Folks,

Don't you just love the smell of cookies or bread baking?  I do, but I hate to wait for the baking process to be completed.  Most of us hate to wait.  We like instant answers to our prayers, instant solutions to our troubles, instant food, etc.  Waiting seems like such an annoyance!  That's why we honk our horns impatiently while waiting for traffic to get moving again.  This month's issue is about using our waiting time as preparation for what is ahead.  God oftentimes has a good reason why He delays in answering our prayers.  Let's find out some things we can do to use our "wait times" more effectively.

Wondering how to stretch your monthly income?  Women in the Bible teach us that home businesses or cottage industries are a good way for women at home to help the family budget.  But remember, your first responsibility is to your Lord, your family and your home.

Joanne Lowe reminds us how hurtful words can be.  Like a punctured balloon, our attitudes and motivations can be totally destroyed or damaged because someone said something hurtful.  This is a good reminder to watch what we say and how we say it.

Homeschoolers can get some ideas on planning their own "summer camp" fun at home and around town.

Enjoy some delicious recipes and gardening tips.

Let's get started...

The Believer's Mission...

"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy."

1 Peter 2:1-10

WAITING:  A TIME OF PREPARATION

"And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ." 2 Thessalonians 3: 5

It's difficult to wait on our Lord, isn't it?

We expect instant answers don't we?

Sometimes we may think that if He really cared, He wouldn't keep us waiting.  Our prayers are desperate in our eyes, and He often seems cruel to withhold the much needed and long awaited response.

When His intervention timetable doesn't match ours, we often become impatient, frustrated, and doubtful.  We begin to wonder why He isn't acting to solve our troubles.

Doubt leads to confusion and questions.  Did we do something wrong that caused Him to withhold His answer?  Did we miss His answer or misunderstand Him?  Maybe what we asked was too trivial for Him to bother with.  Playing the speculation game paralyzes us and opens us up to attack and oppression from our enemy, Satan.

What do you do when you get tired of waiting?

Most of us look for an alternative, forgetting that without the Lord's guidance, our plans often end up disastrously.

Remember Sarah, Abraham's wife?  God promised Abraham a son and made a covenant with him to give his descendants the land from the Nile to the Euphrates (Genesis 15:18). When Sarah did not conceive she took matters into her own hands by giving Abraham her handmaid, a woman named Hagar, to be his wife.  Hagar bore a son to Abraham, but God revealed that fulfillment of His covenant would come through Sarah (Genesis 17).  God kept His promise.  Sarah's son was named Isaac (Genesis 21).  However, the consequences of Sarah's impatience were long lasting as Hagar and her son proved to be an irritation and trial for poor Sarah.

The moral to this true account from the Bible is to trust that waiting is His best plan for now.

Waiting is beneficial!

Instead of fretting about God's delay in answering our prayers or resolving our trials, we need to use our wait time wisely.  Isaiah reminds us that waiting is beneficial:

"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength..." Isaiah 40:31a

Waiting gives us time to make sure our request is in His will.  It is a time we can use to prepare ourselves for what is ahead.  Waiting always draws our attention to the Lord.  With a sharper focus, we have greater discernment and a desire to hear and understand Him.   Make your heart ready for the Lord by confessing and repenting of sin.

Be strengthened by focusing on the Lord.

How do we find our focus on Him?  Prayer, Meditation, Worship, Fasting

Prayer helps us shut out the pull of the world's wisdom and influence.

Reading the Bible provides us with His wisdom and exhorts us to righteousness.

Worshipping Him through words of praise and song lifts our spirits.

Fasting demonstrates our seriousness and serves to help us put our mind entirely on Him.

Meditate on His promises.

He is faithful to make intercession to God the Father for us.

"...It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us." Romans 8:34

Nothing can separate us from His love.

"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?" Romans 8:35

Our Lord never leaves us or forsakes us.

"...for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." Hebrews 13:5

Our Lord uses our times of waiting for His purposes.

Waiting is His way of preparing us for what's ahead.  We need physical rest and a spiritual time of replenishment in His Word and in His presence through prayer.  We can't see the future, but He does and He knows what we need to be ready.

Waiting is sometimes His way of slowing us down.  Our day to day lives are so busy that we forsake Him.  We forget all about Him until we get ourselves into trouble.  Be in an attitude of expectancy.  He wants to spend time with us, building and growing our relationship with Him.

Waiting is often used as a means of redirecting us.  While we wait, we need to assess where we are and what we are doing.  Prayer can reveal a new direction that He has for us.

Waiting can be a time where He is protecting us from something.

Waiting breaks bad habits and patterns of behavior that He finds displeasing.

Conclusion...

Allowing our Lord to have His will in our lives ensures our happiness.  We can be at rest as we meditate upon His promises.  Our trust grows as we accept waiting as part of His plan for us.  We must get our hearts and minds set on pleasing Him.

Our strength isn't sufficient to carry us through our trials, but His strength is.  Strength to cope and overcome troubles and trials comes from trusting Him.  Let us not forget to build our strength by waiting on Him.  While waiting, let us be strengthened by reading our Bible, fasting and praying, and taking physical rest.

Jesus hasn't left us in the lurch.  His silence is not an indicator of departure from us.  His love is faithful and true, and ever present.

When we seek Him with our whole heart and mind, He will be found.  As you wait upon Him, your course of action will be made clear.

"Therefore say thou unto them, thus saith the Lord of hosts; turn ye unto me, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the Lord of hosts." Zechariah 1:3

   MUSINGS... Psalm 34:1-11

"I will bless the Lord at all times:  His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

My soul shall make her boast in the Lord:  the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.

O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.

I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

They looked unto Him, and were lightened:  and their faces were not ashamed.

This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him, and delivereth them.

O taste and see that the Lord is good:  blessed is the man that trusteth in Him.

O fear the Lord, ye His saints:  for there is no want to them that fear Him.

The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger:  but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.

Come, ye children, hearken unto me:  I will teach you the fear of the Lord."

WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS IN THE BIBLE

What's a woman to do?  With pressing economic times upon us, many women who are in the home are weighing their options to help out the family finances.  I believe the Bible gives us a clear plan that we can follow without apology or guilt.  We will see that while we have responsibilities within the home, we also have the authority to earn income for our families within the home environment.  We will look at the examples of several women entrepreneurs in the Bible.  These women can inspire us to use our knowledge, skills, and talents to bring in that extra income we might need.

Let's begin by looking at God's best plan for women, found in Titus 2:1-5

"But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:  That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."

Being a good wife and a good mother is to be a "keeper at home".  What does that mean?  What exactly is the role of the woman in the home?   We can discover that answer by reading Proverbs 31: 13-27:

"She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

She is like the merchant ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

She considereth a field, and buyeth it:  with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

She perceiveth that her merchandise is good:  her candle goeth not out by night.

She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

She is not afraid of the snow for her household:  for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.  She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

The Proverbs 31 Woman It is exciting to note that the Proverbs 31 woman was not only a "keeper at home", but she was also a successful entrepreneur!  She was involved with buying and selling merchandise, real estate, agriculture, and selling cloth and clothing.  She pursued her work with confidence, skill, and wisdom.  While this is a pretty exhaustive list of responsibilities,  it is understood that her primary responsibility of course is to care for the children.  A woman at home is in charge of her household and oversees and performs the duties that go with maintaining a home and a family.  Her godly character motivates her to excellence in all she undertakes.  She is not slack in performing her duties, but sets herself to her work with a willing and glad heart.  She looks to the needs of every member of her household.  While busy with a full schedule, she does not forsake caring for herself, lest her husband become ashamed and embarrassed by her.  Her compassion extends beyond her household to the poor and needy.

There are several other women who were active in service and business in the Bible:

Anna:  She was a woman who had been widowed for eighty-four years.  She found her place of service in the temple where she is called a prophetess.  While she was not in the business of making money, she too found a way to use her knowledge, skills, and talents in the temple.  (Luke 2:36) Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills and to hone unused ones.  Many rewards can be found in working in ministry to help others.

The Prophet's Widow:  This dear lady was a widow with two sons who owed a sum of money to her dead husband's creditors. Without a means of support, she was at her wit's end, for the creditors were going to take away her sons to be bondmen.  Without her sons to work and care for the household, she would be reduced to the mercy of others for her sustenance.  So she takes her case to the prophet Elisha, desperate for a solution.  He asks her what resources she had available.  She tells him that she has nothing but a little pot of oil.   Elisha had a solution.  He tells her to gather empty vessels from her neighbors, and to shut herself into her home with her sons. Then she was to take the little pot of oil  and pour it into the empty vessels.  With such a little pot of oil and a house full of empty containers, she must have thought he had lost his mind.  When one is desperate, one does not argue!  She began to pour the oil into the containers.  Miraculously, the oil did not run out until each empty was filled.  When she told Elisha the outcome, he told her to sell the oil to pay her debt and to live off the remaining money.  (2 Kings 4:1-7)  From this account we can learn that a woman doing business was not frowned upon in Bible days.  We must not judge those whose circumstances deem they must work.  God honors our labor and will reward that labor.

Lydia:  Lydia lived in Thyatira, a city in Asia Minor, known for its indigo dye and textile trade.  Lydia was a seller of the highly valued purple cloth.  In fact, she had grown quite wealthy as a result of her business efforts.  While in Philippi, she heard Paul speak and was converted.  Later her home served as a refuge for Paul and Silas as they made their escape from Philippi.  (Acts 16:12-15)  Lydia's wealth had enabled her to provide a comfortable place for Paul and Silas.  Our wealth is not always for our own use, but to help others who have need.  Let us always use our resources for God's glory.

Conclusion...

If you have a hobby, a skill, or talent, you too have the ability to begin your own home-based business or cottage industry.  Before you decide what you want to do, pray.  Seek the Lord's direction and His guidance in formulating a plan.

A note of warning:  Be cautious about allowing your family to become dependent on your new found income.  If you raise your standard of living, you may find that the mission of the home is forgotten among the vanities of pursuing wealth.  Let "just enough" be your motto.  Let us work with excellence as a testimony of our submission to Jesus Christ, as good stewards.  Remember to tithe your earnings to receive His many blessings.

A PUNCTURED BALLOON

"Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones".
Proverbs:16:24

by Joanne Lowe

Have you ever seen a balloon that has been punctured by a fingernail or object? It only takes one little hole in the balloon to deflate it. It may take a while for it to completely deflate but eventually all the air goes out. You may try to patch it with something and it might help for a while but it doesn't last.

It is the same with our hearts. When someone says something negative to us, a sarcastic remark, a discouraging word, or something that pulls us down, that is all it takes. It only takes one discouraging or sarcastic remark to put the hole in our hearts. That is why it is so important to choose your friends wisely.

People can try to encourage us and tell us not to listen to those people who delight in putting us down, but the hole is already there and nothing anybody says or does can take the hole out of our hearts. Jesus is the only one who can take the pain away and heal our hearts.

Someone told me that I had written something in a writing that I had already put in another writing. I was unaware of it, but I think the reason I used the same illustration is first of all, when I write I have no idea what I am saying until I read it back.

Second, God probably inspired me to use the same illustration because of what a pastor said in a sermon I heard years ago. He said, " I've had a lot of people ask me why I preach almost the same message Sunday after Sunday. It is because God told me to preach it until you grasp it and employ it in your daily lives."

Please don't say things to discourage people. Joyce Landorf, a speaker and author says on one of her teaching tapes: "Men and women are leaving full time ministry in droves because we have not encouraged them." I urge you to be an encourager of others. Let's start building people up instead of putting them down.

Fight the Good Fight

by John Samuel Bewley Monsell

Fight the good fight with all thy might;
Christ is thy Strength and Christ thy Right.
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
Thy joy and crown eternally.

Run the straight race thro' God's good grace;
Lift up thine eyes and seek His face.
Life with its way before us lies;
Christ is the Path and Christ the Prize.

Cast care aside; upon thy Guide
Lean, and His mercy will provide;
Lean, and the trusting soul shall prove
Christ is its Life and Christ its Love.

Faint not nor fear, His arms are near;
He changeth not, and thou art dear.
Only believe, and thou shalt see
That Christ is All in all to thee.

  HOME SCHOOL TIPS

Summer Training

Even though you may not be holding regularly scheduled school times during the summer months, you can still conduct a "summer camp" at home!  The nice thing about having a summer break is the opportunities to learn and explore more than academics.

What kind of opportunities?

Many kids enjoy participating in sports.  Now is the time to schedule those swimming lessons and sports camps.  If you can't afford a special sports camp, maybe there is a teen who would be willing to spend a couple of hours one day a week teaching your kids the finer points of baseball, soccer, tennis, etc.  Expect to pay a reasonable fee and maybe throw in lunch.

Local libraries offer summer reading programs and reading competitions.  For the youngest, check into a story time program.  For the older set, compile a reading list of the classics, some of the best of Christian non-fiction and biography, and some fun fiction.  Keep track of what is read for future school transcripts.

Check your local county cooperative extension group for classes in gardening, baking, sewing, crafts, animal husbandry and more.  Best of all you can participate with your teen!

Plan day trips to explore local points of interest such as museums, art galleries, parks, recreational facilities and places of historic interest.  Take advantage of free activities around your town such as concerts in the park.

Don't forget that churches offer summer programs such Vacation Bible School.  You don't have to be a church member to participate.

Form a co-op of moms who would be willing to lead a class in making a craft, giving a demonstration, reading a story, leading a Backyard Bible Club, or about whatever skill or topic they are knowledgeable in.  One day a week makes it do-able.

The most common reason people cite for a boring summer is lack of funds and a lack of planning.  Your "summer camp" will not be a success if you don't plan ahead and schedule activities.  Memorable times of family fun and learning don't have to cost a lot.  Bring along a camera to record your activities.  Let the kids help create a memory book or a scrapbook.  Years from now, you'll be glad you did!

THOUGHT PROVOKERS

GOING ON A TRIP

"I'm getting ready to make a trip," my middle-aged friend said to me as I visited him in his hospital room.

"Where are you going?" I asked.

"I don't know," he said, "for I have never been there before."

This was the first indication I had that my friend knew, as his family and friends had known for sometime, that he could not recover from his illness.  The doctors had told us that he had cancer, but they had not told him.

In a few weeks this friend, a beloved schoolteacher who had helped many of us impecunious youths to go to school, slipped away to "that land from whose bourne no traveler returns."

Each one of us is getting ready to make such a trip.  And while we do not know much about what the place is like to which we Christians go, God has given us some glimpses.

From Revelation 7:16-17 we learn that in the blessed place called heaven those who arrive "shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.  For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters:  and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes."

Permit me to quote, now, from Bible Study for Married Young People:

"A young man in the military service in South Vietnam, enduring the hardships and dangers of jungle warfare looked forward to the completion of his overseas assignment and his return to the love and comfort of his American home.  Is this not a parable of the battle of life as we look forward to our place among the redeemed in glory?  We are helped to endure the heartaches and pain of the moment by reflecting on what awaits us."

The great difference between the Christian and the non-Christian is not that the Christian finds life easy and free of heartache and the non-Christian always has it rough.  Rather, it is that the Christian has the assurance that "the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us" (Romans 8:18).

As the patriarch Abraham, we look "forward to the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God" (Hebrews 11:10, RSV).

TIP OF THE MONTH  Gardening

*If you live in a hot summer climate, it's a good idea to leave the height of your grass a little taller than in the growing Spring season.  Taller grass will shade your soil, helping to keep it moist and your grass from browning.

*Water your plants and lawn in the early evening to avoid evaporation.

*Wear gloves and shoes when weeding or working the soil to avoid contracting hook worms, round wounds, giardia, or others.  Soil can become contaminated by wildlife and pets. Wash your hands and keep hand sanitizer handy.

*Avoid allowing water to puddle in containers etc. to prevent mosquito breeding grounds.

*This is a good month to begin planting bulbs that will bloom in the Fall.

* Prune non-flowering shrubs.  If you prune flowering shrubs such as lilacs, you will be pruning away next year's flowers.
