  Letter from the Editor...

Dear Folks,

Our June Issue is about persevering through tough times.

The other day I was noticing how well some kinds of flowers grow amongst the weeds. Despite the obnoxious company of weeds, the flowers stood tall and beautiful.  Though the weeds seemed to tower over the blooms seeming to crowd them out of space, the flowers were unfazed.  Their brilliant colors set them apart from the weeds.

I am reminded that sometimes we too find ourselves among the weeds.  It seems difficult to continue to walk in faith, or even to let our light shine.  The weeds of life may crowd us, giving us little room to blossom and flourish, but like the flower, we have to just continue to bloom right where we are.  So hold onto your faith!  When the weeds of life seem out of control, remember our Lord is faithful to get you through.  Turn to Jesus and allow Him to help you overcome those nasty weeds.

This month also celebrates Father's Day.  Fathers more than anyone must stand firm on God's principles since they are the head of the home and accountable before God for all that goes on.  They must search the Scriptures to learn the truths of righteousness and pass them on to their families.  They must set the example of righteousness for all to follow.  Their task is daunting, but with the power of the Holy Spirit, they can lead and be the bulwark their families need to overcome an unrighteous world.  Let's remember to honor our dear fathers this Father's Day.

If you do not know Jesus as your Savior and Lord, please go to:  Do You Know for Sure?  for further explanation.  Then use your "back" button to rejoin us for this month's study.

Let's begin our study...but first enjoy "Daystar" sung by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.

The Believer's Mission...

"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy."

1 Peter 2:1-10

THINK YOU HAVE TROUBLES?

If you think you've got troubles, consider the Apostle Paul.  Paul is like the Energizer Bunny; he kept on going!  I find Paul a fascinating example of perseverance.  Paul had a zealous nature about everything that caught his attention.  We know that he was a faithful persecutor of Christians, believing himself to be a hero among the Jews.  The Christians found him to be a fearsome adversary seeking to destroy them, thereby wiping out Christianity.  When he met Jesus on the road to Damascus, Paul because a fearless advocate for the cause of Christ.  Nothing stopped him.

Consider these Bible accounts that demonstrate Paul's faithfulness despite repeated persecutions and trials:

* After his encounter with Jesus, he was blinded for three days.  He was brought to Damascus where he waited for the next step in his new walk with Jesus.  (Acts 9)

* While in Damascus he began to preach about Jesus in the synagogues causing a major upset among the Jews.  They plotted to kill him, but friends lowered him down the wall of Damascus in a basket because the gates were being watched.  (Acts 9)

* Shunned by the apostles and other Christians in Jerusalem because of his past life of persecution, Paul finally gains acceptance through the testimony of Barnabas.  While in Jerusalem, he caused offense with his bold preaching.  Learning that he was to be killed, some of the Christians escorted him Caesarea and on to Tarsus.

* Wherever Paul went, trouble followed.  The bolder he preached the more irate the crowd became.  He and his partner in ministry, Barnabas, were persecuted, thrown out of towns, and targeted for death.  Yet each time they escaped, filled with joy and many began to follow Jesus.

* Paul broke fellowship with Barnabas over a disagreement about bringing along a young man by the name of John Mark on one of their missionary trips.  Each took on a new partner, creating two teams to spread the message that Jesus was the Christ. (Acts 15)

* Paul and his ministry partner Silas were imprisoned in Philippi.  Certain people were angry because Paul had exorcised a demon from a slave girl.  She was used by her masters to tell fortunes.  With their money making venture shut down, things got ugly.  The slave girl's masters complained to the magistrates who felt it their duty to beat Paul and Silas and imprison them.  They were placed in the inner most part of the prison and placed in stocks to further secure them from possible escape.  While singing praises to God in joy, a great earthquake caused the doors of the prison to open and the stocks to fall off.  Yet, Paul and Silas chose to stay, resulting in the jailer's conversion along with his family. (Acts 16)

* Entering Jerusalem, Paul stirred things up again with a misunderstanding.  He was mobbed and beaten until he was rescued by soldiers.  The soldiers bound him in chains and took him away.  Paul was brought before the Jewish council who made false accusations unworthy of death.  When the Jews plotted to kill him, the chief captain helped him escape when he discovered he was a Roman citizen.  He passed Paul on to Felix, the governor of Judea.  There, Felix also heard his case, but again no fault was found according to Roman Law.  Paul remained in custody for two years, then he was brought before Festus who sought to appease the Jews.  Paul demanded his case go to Caesar in Rome.  While awaiting a decision from Festus, Paul told his story to King Agrippa and his wife Bernice.  King Agrippa would have released Paul, but was bound by Paul's request to appear before Caesar. (Acts 23-26)

* On the way to Rome, Paul sailed on a doomed ship.  They got caught in a seasonal storm off the coast of Clauda near to Crete.  Despite all attempts to save the ship and its crew and passengers, the ship ran aground on the island of Melita.  The cargo was lost, but no one lost their life.  (Acts 26-28)

* No sooner had they reached dry land than Paul was bitten by a viper hidden in a bundle of sticks that Paul had gathered for a fire.  He should have died but he didn't, proving that God saved him.

* When Paul reached Rome, he was chained to a Roman soldier and confined to his home for two years. (Acts 28)

* While imprisoned in Rome, Paul wrote many letters of encouragement and exhortation to the churches he had started which we can now read in the New Testament. These letters were addressed to the believers in Rome, Corinth, Galatia, Ephesus, Phillipi, Colosse, Thesalonica, as well as to Timothy and Philemon, men who were dear to Paul.

As we read of Paul's tribulations over the course of many years, we must ask why did he keep going?  Why didn't he just quit?  How could he face another mob who wanted to kill him?  Surely he must have been a physical wreck after so many beatings and stonings.

How did Paul feel about his troubles?

Paul says in his second letter to the Corinthian church, "And he (Jesus) said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee:  for my strength is made perect in weakness."  Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake:  for when I am weak, than am I strong." (2 Corinthians 12:9-110

In his letter to the Romans, Paul wrote, "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:  by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.  And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also:  knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope:  and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us."  Romans 5:1-5

Despite his afflictions, Paul always had a word of hope to offer to the believers.  To the Corinthians in his second letter, he wrote:  "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.  For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ."  2 Corinthians 1:3-5

Paul realized that his life had purpose according to the will of God, and he was willing to be used to accomplish God's purpose.  Paul was an earnest contender for the faith.

"For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Philippians 1:21

   MUSINGS...

"Who is he that condemneth?  It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?  Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  As it is written, for thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus."  Romans 8:34-29

"Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.  For we are a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:  to the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life.  And who is sufficient for these things?  For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God:  but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ."  2 Corinthians 2:14-17

"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage."

"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities:  for we know not what we should pray for as we ought:  but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.  And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose." Romans 8:26-28

    CHURCH NEWS AROUND THE WORLD...

The Evangelical Church Center is an officially sanctioned Christian worship center in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. The Center is shared by 26 congregations, representing different language and ethnic groups, not denominations. Groups include Arabic, Korean, Filipino, Ethiopians, Chinese, and various languages of India. The Center has been at its present location since 1994, but the churches outgrew the original facilities. The congregations have been raising funds, and are now in the final stages of a complete reconstruction which will have four chapels, as well as multiple classrooms, fellowship areas, and a Christian bookstore.

The largest church at the Center is the Evangelical Community Church of Abu Dhabi. The language of worship and teaching is English, but it is English spoken with a fascinating variety of accents, as there are over 60 nationalities listed in the church's directory. The motto of the ECC is "From the nations, To the nations" as we seek to disciple those the Lord brings to us, and then equip them to return home or go on to their next posting with a passion for Christ and his cause that will enable them to have an impact for Christ wherever they go.

We welcome the help of the larger Body of Christ in completing this project and enabling these strategic ministries to grow and minister in this city at one of the cross-roads of the world. -Pastor Cam Arenson

SPEAK FROM YOUR HEART

by Joanne Lowe

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Proverbs 4: 23 (KJV)

Several years ago when I was in college, one of my classes was Business Communications. One day, the professor announced that we were going to have to present a five minute speech the next day. That didn’t give us much time to prepare for it. It was extremely hard on me because at that time I wasn’t talking to people or looking them in the eye.

I was very anxious that night because I couldn’t think of anything to say. I wasn’t walking with Jesus at that time, but I felt that I should share something from my heart. The only topic that I was confident about sharing was depression because I had lived it for so many years and it definitely would be from my heart.

The next morning I took a blanket to class and everyone asked me why I had brought it because nobody else had brought anything to illustrate their speeches. I knew from personal experience that words mean nothing unless you can back it up with actions. When it was my turn to speak, I shut off the lights, went to the podium and covered it with the blanket, left the room and closed the door.

I waited for a few minutes until I was sure that everyone was wondering what was going to happen. I opened the door, and still leaving the lights off, crawled behind the podium and said with a loud voice “Doesn’t anybody care if I live or die” You could have heard a pin drop in that room. I turned on the lights and began to speak from my heart.

I told them without going into details that I had been confined to mental hospitals for many years off and on for severe depression. I told them that I really had believed that no one loved me, and that no one cared if I lived or died. Then, I told them about the day I cried out to Jesus from under the bed and said, “If You could possibly love me and if You will get me out of this place, I will serve You for the rest of my life as long as You will help me.”

While I was speaking, I walked up to several of the students in the room and placed my hand on their shoulder and looked them in the eye and told them “Jesus Loves you and cares about you”. I told them that there was nothing as urgent and important in life as loving one another.

I sometimes would choke up while speaking and my voice would get very low so that it was difficult to hear me talking. After class was over, several of the students thanked me and said that I had courage to share about my life. One student came up to me and said something that is stamped on my heart that I will never forget. She said, “I didn’t know anybody else could understand how I feel. Do you think Jesus could love me?” I told her that if Jesus could love me as rotten as I was, He can love anybody.

Even though I made some mistakes in my speech according to the textbook, my professor gave me an “A” for the speech because he said that he liked how I moved around the room and made it personal. He said, “I am impressed with your courage to share from your heart.”

Yes, I understand when someone is hurting because I have experienced a crippling and devastating depression. However, nobody understands like Jesus! He sees into the hidden corners of our hearts and sees the things that we hide from our spouses, children, parents, siblings, loved ones and friends. It doesn’t matter if we deny even to ourselves that nothing is wrong, Jesus sees and His Heart is full of compassion for us.

If you are hurting today, go to Jesus and tell Him you are hurting. He knows but He wants you to come to Him like a child would go to their parents. Then, share your burdens with someone you can trust; someone who will not judge you or try to fix you. It is not our job or responsibility to fix someone, that is God’s job and responsibility. We are to love people to Jesus by our hugs, our words and the way we live our lives.

If you don’t know Jesus, the Saviour of the world, there is no better time than right now to get acquainted with Him. You can be saved and not know Him. Do you know what makes Him sad and what makes Him happy? How often do you talk to Him during the day? Do you laugh with Him and cry with Him? Do you love Him?

When He Comes

by Fay Inchfawn

(real name:  Elizabeth Rebecca Ward)

     "When He comes!
      My sweetest 'When'!"
                         -C. ROSSETTI.

Thus may it be (I thought) at some
          day's close,
Some lilac-haunted eve, when every rose
Breathes forth its incense. May He find
          me there,
In holy leisure, lifting hands of prayer,
     In some sweet garden place,
To catch the first dear wonder of His Face!

     Or, in my room above,
In silent meditation of His love,
My soul illumined with a rapture rare.
It would be sweet, if even then, these eyes
Might glimpse Him coming in the East-
          ern skies,
And be caught up to meet Him in the
          air.

But now! Ah, now, the days
     Rush by their hurrying ways!
No longer know I vague imaginings,
     For every hour has wings.
     Yet my heart watches . . . as I work I
          say,
All simply, to Him: "Come! And if to-day,
Then wilt Thou find me thus: just as I
          am—
     Tending my household; stirring goose-
          berry jam;
Or swiftly rinsing tiny vests and hose,
With puzzled forehead patching some one's
          clothes;
Guiding small footsteps, swift to hear, and
          run,
From early dawn till setting of the sun."

And whensoe'er He comes, I'll rise and go,
Yes, all the gladlier that He found me so.

  HOME SCHOOL TIPS

Document Your Child's Homeschool Education

How complete are your records?  If called upon to document your child's progress from year to year, would your records present an accurate representation?

I have always been a good record keeper, but I saw it more as a means to prove our children were not illiterate.  Now that our homeschool journey is completed, I am thankful for our diligence for colleges require records!

It has been my practice to keep a record of the scope and sequence of all material presented during our school year.  This would include the title, author, publisher information, and table of contents for each textbook.  I also included high school age reading lists to document books read in each subject.

Another important piece of information to include in your records are grades for each subject.  You may choose to provide a final yearly grade consisting of quarterly grades averaged from daily grades.  Or you may choose to write a narrative documenting the work accomplished to attach to a portfolio of assignments with a letter grade assigned for completed work.  Do not use a pass or fail grading system because it does not translate well into a transcript.  Be sure to include the grading scale you used.  For example:  A=4, 90-100; B=3, 80-89; C=2, 70-79; D=1, 60-69.

At the end of each school high school grade, I write a transcript that includes our curriculum scope and sequence, grades, standardized test scores for SAT, PSAT, ACT, IOWA tests, etc., the overall grade point average, a list of extracurricular activities, and any special accomplishments.  For a sample transcript go to:  http://www.liberty.edu/media/1240/HOMESCHOOL%20TRANSCRIPT.pdf  (This page is sponsored by Liberty University.)

Keep copies of all reports and correspondence with your school district or umbrella church or organization.  These help to document your child's education and compliance with education laws in your state.

Records should be maintained throughout the school years and kept through at least through the first year of college.

"Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved." Psalm 80:7

THOUGHT PROVOKERS

THOUGHTS ON PERSEVERANCE

"Perseverance is the badge of true saints. The Christian life is not a beginning only in the ways of God, but also a continuance in the same as long as life lasts. It is with a Christian as it was with the great Napoleon: he said, “Conquest has made me what I am, and conquest must maintain me.” So, under God, dear brother in the Lord, conquest has made you what you are, and conquest must sustain you. Your motto must be, “Excelsior.” He only is a true conqueror, and shall be crowned at the last, who continueth till war’s trumpet is blown no more. Perseverance is, therefore, the target of all our spiritual enemies. The world does not object to your being a Christian for a time, if she can but tempt you to cease your pilgrimage, and settle down to buy and sell with her in Vanity Fair. The flesh will seek to ensnare you, and to prevent your pressing on to glory. “It is weary work being a pilgrim; come, give it up. Am I always to be mortified? Am I never to be indulged? Give me at least a furlough from this constant warfare.” Satan will make many a fierce attack on your perseverance; it will be the mark for all his arrows. He will strive to hinder you in service: he will insinuate that you are doing no good; and that you want rest. He will endeavour to make you weary of suffering, he will whisper, “Curse God, and die.” Or he will attack your steadfastness: “What is the good of being so zealous? Be quiet like the rest; sleep as do others, and let your lamp go out as the other virgins do.” Or he will assail your doctrinal sentiments: “Why do you hold to these denominational creeds? Sensible men are getting more liberal; they are removing the old landmarks: fall in with the times.” Wear your shield, Christian, therefore, close upon your armour, and cry mightily unto God, that by His Spirit you may endure to the end."

TIP OF THE MONTH  -  Grocery Shopping Tips

Move through the aisles first loading your cart with boxes and cans.  Then move to the product department where your selections can be placed on top.

Select perishable and frozen items last then go right to the checkout to insure that products stay cold or frozen.  Store in a small cooler or insulated bag while transporting.

Load detergents and soaps away from food items, preferably on the bottom of your cart.

When unloading your groceries at checkout, start at the back of the conveyor belt with the produce, then the frozen, and last the cans, boxes, and detergents. Items will be bagged and placed in your cart with the heaviest items on the bottom.

Recycle plastic and paper grocery bags.  When bringing groceries home from the market, keep a store of plastic bags in the trunk of your car.  Take them inside the market with you for bagging your groceries.

When bagging your groceries, pack meat products in a bag apart from other groceries, then place in a small cooler or insulated bag.  Throw the bags the meat was packed in away after use.

Pack heavy fruits such as apples on the bottom of your bag, then add soft fruits on top.

Load your trunk with the lightest items such as eggs, produce, etc. at the back.  Next, load the insulated bags, then place the canned goods and boxes in front. Detergents should go to the side apart from grocery items.  Coolers may need to be moved to the car interior.
