  Letter from the Editor...

Dear Folks,

With so much turmoil in the world today, it is easy to think that God has forgotten us.  We wonder if we are under His judgment and deserving of terrible punishment.  Yet we must remember that our Lord loves us with a steadfast love.  He wants all to come unto Him.  He is longsuffering, not willing for any to be separated from Him.  It is not our good works or best efforts that keeps Him close, but His great love. If you are not sure if you qualify as a believer, then please visit our  Do you know for sure? page first.  Let's get that settled.  If you're struggling to trust His love, then this issue is for you.  Let's begin our study...

The Believer's Mission...

"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy."

1 Peter 2:1-10

The Steadfast Love of God

The Lord God Jehovah loves His people, but He delights in obedience.  He is a jealous God and does not want to compete with our idols.  He demands our allegiance to Him alone.  He wants our love and devotion.  Alas, we fail Him miserably, but his love is steadfast, never failing, always seeking to reconcile and restore us to a righteous relationship with Him.

Let us consider our relationship to our Lord in light of a marriage between a husband and a wife...

I recently heard a radio pastor talking about the concept mentioned in Timothy for bishops and deacons to be the husband of one wife. He believed the passage meant having only one wife at a time.  While he acknowledged that a past divorce will render believing men unfit for certain types of service in the Church, he seemed to imply that God wasn't worried if a previous marriage had failed.  I believe this is grave error.  God never intended for couples to divorce.  The concept of divorce doesn't line up with what Scriptures teach us about Him.  Marriage is a picture of our relationship to Jesus. The issue here isn't about remarriage or divorce and its validity, but about the love of our Lord for His Bride, the believers.  Remember that we have forgiveness from sin, and He forgets our sin from the moment He forgives.  The good news is that He isn't willing to divorce us!  God cherishes our faithfulness to Him!

"Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath a husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.  So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress:  but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God."  Romans 7:1-4

Let us consider His relationship with His chosen people, the Hebrews...

Nor has He given up on His chosen people.  He has not negated His covenant with Israel, but wants them also to come into the Church of believers.  The Old Testament is filled with historical accounts of the Hebrew people who serve as an example to us of His unfailing love and mercy and grace.  We see the beautiful picture of a beloved people who consistently left their God for idols made with men's hands.  Yet they  were forgiven and restored time after time, as they were willing to turn from their sin and obey God.  Our God is longsuffering, not willing for any to perish.  His longing for His chosen ones will be fulfilled in the end times when a remnant will come to faith.  The story is told of Hosea, a prophet commanded by God to marry to a harlot, an adulteress.  This is a literal story that illustrates God's unfailing love despite the sin of His people.

"O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God, for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. Take with you words, and turn to the Lord:  say unto him, take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously:  so will we render the calves of our lips. Assur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses, neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, ye are our gods:  for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.  I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely:  for mine anger is turned away from him."  Hosea 14:1-4

"I say then, hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Isralite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.  God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew."  Romans 11:1-2a

"Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace." Romans 11:5

Our God is a God of justice.  He chastises those who love Him, purposing to bring them back to Himself when they have strayed.  He is a jealous God and will not let His people go.

Consider His unfailing love to the whole world...

There are many who seek a different way to enter into the Kingdom of God.  They seek their own way, without thought for Him who died on a cross.  They do not seek after the Lord God Jehovah, but they seek the kingdom.  It is clear that while our Lord is longsuffering, He demands that we enter into fellowship with Him through Jesus.

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life:  no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6

Those who would demand an entrance on their own merits or on the merits of other mere men are rebellious, with no real love for our Lord.  Jesus is not their Savior nor their Lord.  God promises that the wicked will not go unpunished.  Yet, He waits, allowing time for repentance and a turning to Him, for all who will come are welcome if they will come as He commands.

"For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God."  Romans 10:3

Our God is a god of steadfast love. But even the most righteous love wears thin under constant rejection. There will come a day when judgment will be administered as punishment for rejecting Him.  For those who do not want Him will have no part in His kingdom.  We were created for His good pleasure and not our own.

"The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy."  Psalm 147:11

MUSINGS... The Story of the Rechabites

"The word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying, go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.

Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habaziniah, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites; and I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door:  and I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them, drink ye wine.

But they said, we will drink no wine:  for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:  neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any:  but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers. Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters; nor to build houses for us to dwell in:  neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed:  but we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us. But it came to pass, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians:  so we dwell at Jerusalem.

Then came the word of the Lord unto Jeremiah, saying, thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, will ye not receive instruction to hearken to my words? saith the Lord.

The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed; for unto this day they drink none, but obey their father's commandment:  notwithstanding I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye hearkened not unto me.  I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers:  but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me.

Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me:  therefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel; behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them:  because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered.

And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:  therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever."  Jeremiah 35

The Security of a Commitment

"Every way of a man is right in his own eyes:  but the Lord pondereth the hearts." Proverbs 21:2

Have you made a commitment to Jesus?  Do you know that He expects us to submit to His lordship?

Our Lord Jesus Christ calls us to make a commitment to abide under His lordship.  How often we hear of someone who wants to be saved, but is unwilling to turn over control of their life to the Savior.  We call out to Him to be our Savior, but often leave out an important aspect of this covenant; that is the commitment to submit ourselves in obedience to His laws and commands.

Commitment is a word that is not popular in society today.  We want a life without strings attached.  Many don't want to be bound to any code of honor or creed.  The watchword is freedom with full autonomy.  Going our own way and making our own decisions based on our own standard of behavior is becoming the norm.  Everyone does what is right in their own eyes.

"For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord:  they would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.  Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices." Proverbs 1:29-31

We want the benefits of His forgiveness, grace, and mercy without a personal relationship with Him.  How arrogant of us to think that we can handle our lives better than the one who created us and adopted us into His kingdom.  We have forgotten the caution in Proverbs to trust in Him and not in our own understanding.

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding."  Proverbs 3:5

Salvation and lordship go together and are not separate issues.  You cannot have one without the other.  Our Lord wants our faith to be in Him.  If we have faith in Him, then we will submit to Him as our Lord and Savior, able to trust His lordship.  Our faith is demonstrated by the works of our love for Him and for others.  It is only from a heart of love and devotion for Him that we can perform works worthy of Him.

When we commit ourselves to Him, He opens the door of our heart and mind to give us understanding and knowledge of Him.  We become secure in the knowledge that we belong to Him forever and no one can remove us from Him.

Think about the benefits we receive when we submit ourselves to the lordship of Jesus:

*My commitment to Jesus keeps me from being double-minded.  I seek the Lord's guidance to avoid making thoughtless and inappropriate  decisions.  I will base my standards on His Word and will not be wishy-washy on issues that are clearly defined as sin in His Word.

*My commitment to Jesus helps me stay on track in obedience to my Lord's commands.  I flee temptation as I am commanded, desiring to please Him by my obedience.  I will maintain a clear conscience, recognizing that I need to confess my sin and seek His forgiveness.

*My commitment to Jesus keeps me from doubting that He will help me in my time of need.  I trust Him to do what seems best for me according to His will.

It is not a surprise that we struggle with lordship issues.  We are weak, but He is strong and will enable us to overcome the weaknesses of our fleshly desires, if we will commit our lives into His care and keeping.

Placing our trust in Jesus gives us security.  We can know where we stand on important issues, and why we must stand against the false teachings of the world.  When called upon to give a reason for our faith, we will not waiver, for our commitment is certain.

"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts:  and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear" 1 Peter 3:15

HEAVEN’S CAMPUS

by Joanne Lowe

“And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.  Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.  And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.  And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.  And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.  And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.  And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.” Revelation 21: 10, 11, 22, 23, 22: 1, 3 – 5 (King James Version)

We have many beautiful campuses but none of them can come close to matching the beauty of heaven’s campus.  Not only is it the most beautiful campus; we have the greatest president of all at that campus and His name is Jesus.  There will be no darkness on that campus because He is the light of the campus.  He is such a shining light that there could not be any darkness.  We have never seen a light as brilliant as the Lamb of God.

For those of us who have made a heart commitment to Jesus and asked Him to forgive us, cleanse us in His atoning blood and save us, we have this glorious light in our hearts right now.  He is the light of our hearts and He shines His tender spotlight of love into the hidden corners of our hearts.  Thank God for the light of the Lamb of God.

Thank God that one day out of His unconditional heart of love, He walked that long, lonely and seemingly endless road to Calvary and there allowed Himself to be crucified for us.  There is no one like Jesus!  No one loves like Jesus Loves!  He is the dearest friend that we will ever have.  He will never fail us and He will never leave us, not even for one minute.  All hail, King Jesus!  Worthy is the Lamb of God!  He is the beautiful rose of Sharon and the Lily of the valley.  He is the one who gently and tenderly enfolds us in His arms of unconditional love, mercy, grace and protection and kisses away our tears of sorrow and grief.

Are you going to walk the streets of glory with Him?  When He comes back for us and we see Him face to face will you be able to look Him in the eyes knowing that you served Him the best you could with His help?  Maybe you will have to hang your head in shame because you are reluctant to look Him in the eyes because you know that you did not serve Him with all of your heart.  Are you giving Jesus all of your time and talents or are you keeping some of your time for your own desires?  Will He say to you on that glorious and victorious day “Well done, thou good and faithful servant”?  How can we do less than give Jesus all that we have and all that we are because without Him, we are nothing.

I'm Not Ashamed to Own My Lord

By Isaac Watts

I’m not ashamed to own my Lord,
Or to defend His cause;
Maintain the honor of His Word,
The glory of His cross.

Jesus, my God! I know His Name,
His Name is all my trust;
Nor will He put my soul to shame,
Nor let my hope be lost.

Firm as His throne His promise stands,
And He can well secure
What I’ve committed to His hands
Till the decisive hour.

Then will He own my worthless name
Before His Father’s face,
And in the new Jerusalem
Appoint my soul a place.

  HOME SCHOOL TIPS

Dealing with the Ho-Hums

This time of year can be particularly difficult.  It's been a couple of months since Christmas break and dreary winter weather has set in.  Kids get bored and restless at this time of year, and find it difficult to stay focused on schoolwork.  If your family is struggling to get through the day, then you need these simple tips on dealing with the ho-hums!

1.  Let your imaginations run wild with trips into the historic past or dream of the future.  Activities might include designing a dress up costume, listening to period music, drawing pictures of life in the future, or inventing a new machine with Leggos.  Consider interviewing relatives about their growing up years.  Investigate the family genealogy.

Check out these sites:

http://memory.loc.gov/learn/start/time.html

http://www.erasofelegance.com/index.html

http://www.cyndislist.com/

2.  Take a virtual trip using the Internet to research locales.  Kids can write to a missionary family.  As a family, consider sponsoring a child in a poor country.  Have the kids send emails to everyone on your address list and request a postcard of their locale.  Look at maps and research the flora and fauna.  Investigate how to plan a trip by plotting travel routes, scenic stops, and overnight accommodations.  Many hotels and bed & breakfasts have websites that provide photos of rooms and give tips on what to do during your stay.

Check out these sites for virtual tours of scenic interest:

3.  Plan a field trip.  Explore local museums and historic points of interest.  Visit the local Gym or YMCA for swimming or skating.  Investigate geocaching and try to find one in your area.  Plan outdoor fun learning experiences with Dad such as snowshoeing or hiking.

Check out these sites for more info:

4.  Understandably, the weather is often too nasty to get out so plan some fun indoor activities.  Enjoy some easy scientific experiments.  Have fun with crafts.  Build a bird feeder.

Check out these sites for ideas:

Routine is good until everyone is whizzing through the day on autopilot.  Let's teach our kids to live life on purpose, embracing the opportunities of each day. Remember, sometimes opportunities to do something new must be manufactured.  Plan a time each day after the regular school work is completed or plan a unit study one day a week that incorporates all the subjects.

"Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing."  Psalm 145:16

THOUGHT PROVOKERS

Excerpt from "A Radical Change" (Sermon of July 19, 1874) by Charles Spurgeon...

"Conversion may be known, next, by this fact, that it changes the whole man.

It changes the principle upon which he lives; he lived for self, now he lives for God.

He did right because he was afraid of punishment if he did wrong, but now he shuns evil because he hates it.

He did right because he hoped to merit heaven, but now no such selfish motive sways him:  he knows that he is saved, and he does right out of gratitude to God.

His objects in life are changed:  he lived for gain or worldly honor; now he lives for the glory of God.

His comforts are changed:  the pleasures of the world and sin are nothing to him; he finds comfort in the love of God shed abroad in his heart by the Holy Ghost.

His desires are changed:  that which he once panted and pined for he is now content to do without; and that which he once despised he now longs after as the hart panteth after the water brooks.

His fears are different; he fears man no more, but fears his God.

His hopes are also altered; his expectations fly beyond the stars.

The man has begun a new life."
