"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy." 1 Peter 2:1-10

TRUE PEACE COMES BY TRUSTING GOD
Our hearts and minds are burdened with fears and sorrows. Where is the peace we seek? Why can’t we find it?
Daily we read and hear reports of conflict, but there is no peace. Treaties are signed, negotiations are made, but still there is no peace. We bargain and trade, hoping to buy peace and relief from strife and division, but peace still eludes us.
In our innermost being, we are often fearful and worried, wondering about the future. Will I lose my job? How will I pay for medical care? Where will we live? Who will take care of me in my old age?
There is a peace that we can appropriate for ourselves. That peace comes only from God.
"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:7
Peace comes from God…
To receive real and lasting peace, we must trust in God who sent Jesus, His Son to be the Savior of the world. Who would think that peace comes from trusting God? Trust implies absolute confidence, but is there ever a time when we can have that kind of peace?
Yes, the Bible teaches us that we can find true peace when we place our trust in God. While we struggle through trials, sorrows, and sufferings, we can have inner peace, confident that we are in the center of our Lord's will and purpose. We need not fear, but must realize that He is in control of all that happens to us.
It is difficult to believe in a God we cannot see or touch. We struggle to believe His Word and put our confidence in what we read in His Word. Questions fill our minds as we struggle to trust the One who allows death and war and struggles to overtake us. How can such be trusted?
Peace will not come until the hearts of mankind are changed. There is only one who can do that. His name is Jesus. When we make a life without God, we are destined to a life of conflict and woe. We cannot be happy apart from our Creator. It is time to lay down our useless plans for peace and turn to Jesus for the solution to our conflicts.
Jesus is our mediator who stands before God on our behalf. Sin separated us from our Creator, and must be atoned for. Since Jesus has died in our place and risen again; we are declared righteous by God. We have peace.
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Romans 5:1-2
Will you accept His intercession on your behalf?
Jesus stands between mankind and God, the Lamb who was sacrificed on a cross so that we might have peace with God. Nothing else will satisfy the requirements of God’s Law.
He asks that you let go of your own willful ways and turn to Him. Lay down your sin; all that is in violation of God’s Law. Seek Him and He shall be found. He will change your heart and bring you peace.
"Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another." Romans 14:19
Personal testimony…
When I accepted the sacrifice Jesus made on a cross, I took responsibility for my sin, realizing that I could not save myself. I knew that I could not please God, for I was unclean. My sin had caused a great separation between me and God that I could not bridge.
I prayed, asking Jesus to be my Savior. I did not know what would happen next, but I knew I did not want to be without God. By faith, I appealed to Jesus to forgive me for my sin, trusting that the words of the Bible were true.
I felt as though I was standing on the edge of a precipice, with all of creation awaiting my decision. I took that step of faith, knowing I had nothing to lose, but everything to gain. Jesus met me at that moment, receiving me as His own. My heart was flooded with joy, as the Holy Spirit took up residence within me. I knew that a threshold had been crossed. I am not the same, I have been changed. I am sure that Jesus, God’s Son, is the only Savior of the world and the only One who can bring peace.
Trials and difficulties still come into my life, but I am learning to trust Him more with each one. He never fails me, even though I wait anxiously for His help. I am not perfect in my trust, but I continue to struggle against my worldly self and the doubts that still assail me. I pray for help in overcoming doubt and my desire to control the outcomes.
Exhortation...
Believers, do not lose your love for God because you suffer many difficulties. There will always be trials to strengthen and test us. Accepting Jesus as our Savior and Lord always causes division and strife, for we war against the devil
He is faithful to keep His promises. Times of testing come to strengthen our faith in Him. We must learn these lessons so we can grow strong and become more dependent on His help and intervention in our times of need. These lessons will stand us in good stead to help us when our faith is challenged.
"Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them." Psalm 119:165
Conclusion of the matter…
To have true peace, you must trust God for everything and in everything. He alone can intervene on our behalf. He alone can provide solutions to life's problems. He alone can give comfort and hope.
Trust in God replaces worry and fear, and removes the responsibility for the outcome from us to Him. It is then that we find real and lasting peace.
"Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost." Romans 15:13

"And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath He quickened together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses; blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross" Colossians 2:13-14
MUSINGS... Colossians 1:9-23a
"For this cause we also, since the day we heard it; do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son: in whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins: who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: for by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and For Him: and He is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things He might have the preeminence.
For it pleased the Father that in Him should all fulness dwell; and, having made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself; by Him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath He reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in His sight: if ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven;..."

Our Thanksgiving Day
–Youth’s Companion
I.
Children, do you know the story
Of the first Thanksgiving Day,
Founded by our Pilgrim Fathers
In that time so far away?
II.
They had given for religion
Wealth and comfort, yes, and more,
Left their homes, and friends, and kindred,
For a bleak and barren shore.
III.
On New England’s rugged headlands,
Now where peaceful Plymouth lies,
There they built their rough log cabins,
‘Neath the cold, forbidding skies.
IV.
And too often, e’en the bravest,
Felt his blood run cold with dread,
Lest the wild and savage red-man
Burn the roof above his head.
V.
Want and sickness, death and sorrow,
Met their eyes on every hand.
And before the Springtime reached them,
They had buried half their band.
VI.
But their noble, brave endurance
Was not exercised in vain;
Summer brought them brighter prospects,
Ripening seed and waving grain.
VII.
And the patient Pilgrim mothers,
As the harvest time drew near,
Looked with happy, thankful faces
At the full corn in the ear.
VIII.
So the governor, William Bradford,
In the gladness of the heart,
To praise God for all his mercies,
Set a special day apart.
IX.
That was the Autumn, children,
Sixteen hundred and twenty-one;
Scarce a year from when they landed,
And the colony begun.
X.
And now, when in late November,
Our Thanksgiving feast is spread,
‘Tis the same time-honored custom
Of those Pilgrims long since dead.
XI.
We shall never know the terrors
That they braved, years, years ago,
But for all their struggle gave us,
We our gratitude can show.
XII.
And the children of New England,
If they feast, or praise, or pray,
Should bless God for those brave Pilgrims,
And their first Thanksgiving Day.

THE STORY OF RED, A BIRD DOG
Red was a German Shorthaired Pointer pup, full of energy and mischief. With training and time, we hoped he would become an expert hunting dog. We were wrong.
At three months, Red was bouncing off the walls. He loved antagonizing our German Shepherd, nipping at her heels, then running away. When Mama wasn’t looking, he was pulling the freshly washed sheets off the clothesline. No one could go outside unless prepared to fend off Red. He jumped and bounced and raced around incessantly; that is when he was in the yard. Red should have been named Houdini because he was such an escape artist, we couldn’t keep him inside the fence. It wasn’t long before Red had worn out his welcome.
Even though Red was a wash up as an obedient family pet, he wasn’t a total loss as a bird dog. One day as Mama and I looked outside, we noticed Red prancing around the yard like King Tut. He was strutting around like he had a secret only he knew. Intrigued, Mama and I continued to watch him, positive he was up to something. Mama thought he might have something in his mouth, but it was hard to say for sure. We had to think of a plan to get close enough to take a look. If he realized we were too interested, he would play keep away with us.
We decided that I would go outside and as soon as he was within reach, I would grab his collar and hold him. Then Mama could find out what he was so proud of. Slowly and nonchalantly I opened the door. I didn’t want him to be suspicious. As soon as he saw me, he made a bee-line at full speed. Red couldn’t wait to show me what he had. He pranced over just close enough so I could see that he did indeed have something in his mouth. It was a baby bird, still alive and apparently unharmed.
“How are we going to get that bird from Him?” Mama mused out loud. Neither of us wanted to see the bird harmed, but we weren’t sure Red was going to be willing to let us take it. I volunteered to try.
By this time Red was dancing near the door, tossing his head, clearly pleased with himself over his prize. I talked to him gently and softly, hoping he would let me get closer. On my second try I had him by the collar. Then it was up to Mama to rescue the baby bird. To our surprise Red readily relinquished his prey. While I kept Red busy with a ball, Mama put the baby in a safe location where its Mama could find it.
That was the highlight of Red’s escapades. Soon after he went missing for a couple of weeks before we found him several blocks away happily living with another family who thought he was a stray. Turns out they thought Red was simply wonderful. They had a houseful of boys who adored him and delighted in his antics. After tracking him down a second time to the same home, we decided to let him stay. We didn’t tell them how relieved we were to be rid of him.
Red, our incorrigible mischievous bird dog, would surely have been condemned to a life of eternal punishment at our house. Thank goodness another family came to love him. With them, he had a new start with all his past bad behaviors forgotten.
Thinking back to those awful months with Red reminds me of my relationship with my Savior, Jesus Christ. You see the Bible says that everyone is a sinner, condemned to an eternal punishment. But God loved us so much that He sent His Son Jesus to die on a cross so we could be forgiven and have a place with Him. Jesus took the punishment we deserved.
Now I know that when God the Father looks at me, He sees red, the blood of Jesus which covers my sin. We weren’t too fond of Red because he was so much trouble. How thankful I am that my heavenly Father never gets tired of me and never considers giving up on me. That’s because He loves me.

Autumn: The Last Hurrah!
The sunshine seemed particularly clear and bright, not like the intense summer sun we’d sweated through. No, this autumn sunshine was magical, causing all the colored leaves to look more brilliant. The intensity of the shades of orange, red, and gold seemed almost like the trees were putting on a bit of bravado in defiance of the coming winter. They must know that autumn is their last hurrah before winter leaves them barren and stark against a gray, cold sky. Life ebbs away in just such a fashion, with the years passing by in a flurry of changing seasons.
Inhaling the pungency of the air, I notice it seems a bit dusty, with a bit of old grass and potpourri to flavor it. Some of the summer blooms have faded, but autumn seems to spark a new breath of life into the marigolds, impatience, and mums. The cool nights have aided in restoring the spring vitality that has been sapped by the summer heat. I rejoice in their longevity and the beauty they bring to the waning days before winter.
I love to walk the apple orchards, picking one here and one there, sipping hot cider to ward off the chill, and eating apple cider donuts! At that moment, I realize that life is precious, needing to be savored, as if it were the last gift to be opened. Autumn is the time to celebrate the harvest of our labors with rejoicing in song!
While we think new life and new experiences are reserved for the spring and summer years of life, I’ve found that the autumn years of life are often times more fruitful and certainly more colorful! Life is not over just yet! These last years before retirement seem to be the last hurrah of a life well spent. So much has been accomplished over these years! Appreciation never dims for the life lessons learned. Like the trees of fall, life has moved from humdrum to spectacular!
Watching the squirrels knock the leaves and hickory nuts out of the tree is a feast for tired eyes. I delight in watching them scamper down to grab their treasure, hiding it for a harsher time when the temperature is cold and snow covers the ground. I sit still, hoping they will come closer, unaware of my presence. Little toe nails tread lightly, as a little face peers at me from behind the flower planter. I say “hello” as it ducks and runs for cover. Their antics amuse me. They’ve gotten used to my presence and now seem willing to accept me among the scenery.
Autumn smells strongly of change. It’s sometimes difficult to accept life’s changes, but we can learn to embrace them with grace and dignity. Something better or just as good is sure to come along when we let go of what’s in our hands. I’ve always heard the old saying about holding things lightly, and now I understand. Things don’t last, and time doesn’t stand still. Enjoy the moment, but be ready for new moments. Be willing to let go of the old and embrace the new. Clichés, yes, but there is an element of truth I find. If we’re holding on so tightly to the past, we will never be able to embrace the joys of the present and the future. Autumn is about coming to terms with the changes life brings and finding joy anyway.
Acceptance of ourselves in this stage of life is gradual, and like Autumn, sometimes embraced with warmth while at other times, it is embraced with coolness and chill. There are times when we may recall the spring and summer of life with sadness, knowing that those times are over and finished. Yet we can rejoice for the fruit those seasons of life have born. Surely it’s a mixed blessing! With time and patience, acceptance finally comes. Relish the freedom it brings. We need no longer worry about what others think or fret over what could have been. Instead open your arms wide, willing to receive whatever God brings us.
Certainly, now is the time to forge ahead, storing up new experiences and memories. Embrace life and don’t waste a minute of it! Life is rich and rewarding and never dull in the fall. There is a security in knowing Jesus as Savior and Lord, knowing that He is in control and will see me through each moment.
So when the weather of life changes, find a comfortable chair, curl up with your favorite crocheted afghan, pour a hot cup of tea, and rest awhile, but just until the chill goes away. Then get ready for action, springing up with a smile, ready to move forward to all the new challenges of life that our Lord brings. Let us give thanks for His many blessings and the precious memories we have.

Our Country
-Author Unknown
Now call the brave sons of your country around you,
And strike for the freedom your forefathers won;
Raise high the bright beams of freedom above you,
And strike in the battle so nobly begun!
The bright, glossy streams of our won lovely mountains
Still murmur as sweetly as did they of yore;
But say, yet again by their sweet flowing fountains,
Shall liberty rally as did she before?
Far, far on the bright sunny hills in our wildwood,
The brave sons of freedom leap glad to her call;
They think on the bright merry morn of their childhood,
And sigh e’en to think that their country could fall;
Yet, o’er our loved land, on each hill-top and valley,
They gather them now in bright battle array,
And proudly around their loved standard they rally—
They’ll fight for our country—they’re ready to-day!
They think on the day of our country’s disaster—
The foreigner’s tread is now heard on our shore;
They shout their loud watch word, “Our Country,” and faster
They gather their sons to the fight than before.
My Country! Oh, why do thy children forsake thee,
And make thee a refuge for strangers and foes?
Yet, yet on the dim dusky landscapes around us
Will dawn soon in gladness thy day of repose.

HOME SCHOOL TIPS
Teach Your Children How to Be a Good Citizen
It is so important that we teach our young people how to be a good citizen. The best teaching method is by example. They need to see you participate in civic matters.
Let us teach them to seek the Lord for all decisions and to pray for wise and Godly leaders who will honor our Lord and His Word. Show them righteousness so they can discern the evil and resist its pull.
Following are ways to teach the responsibilities of citizenship:
*Take them with you when you vote so they can witness citizens making crucial decision through the vote.
*Discuss the issues. Talk about what you believe and why. Back it up with the authority of God's Word.
*Support your viewpoint. Sign petitions that lets Congress know your viewpoint. Make telephone calls to voice your stand on issues. Write letters to your congressional representatives and senators.
*Attend town meetings to gain understanding of issues in your locale. Know your town leaders and their viewpoints.
*Write an opinion piece for your newspaper discussing your view or to inform others about an issue.
*Pray for government leaders.
*Pray about specific bills and those who are instrumental in crafting them.
Learning begins with gathering information. Teach your children to check their facts with official sources. Read bills online to find out what is said, then discuss them. Find out more about your congressman or senator.
Resource Links:
Write your U.S. Representative: https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml
Contact your U.S. Senator: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm
Find Senate Bills: http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/legislative/g_three_sections_with_teasers/legislative_home.htm
The Official U.S. Government page: http://www.usa.gov/
Educational resources from the House of Representatives: http://www.house.gov/house/Educate.shtml
One of my fondest memories of my middle school years was learning how Congress works by actually being the Congress. We had two 9th grade classes. Kids were divided up to be on the House of Representatives or Senate. We wrote bills, gave speeches, and voted! It was loads of fun. Be creative when teaching your kids.
Fun ways to learn about our government:
*Create a mini Senate or House of Representatives
*Write bills that would be pertinent to your family
*Write and give a speech to support an issue
Teach your kids the fundamentals of our Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Read a copy of the Bill of Rights: http://www.ratical.org/co-globalize/BillOfRights.html
Read the U.S. Constitution: http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/constitution_transcript.html
Talk about what constitutes good citizenship. Remind your students that good citizenship begins with caring about others. Help them get involved with ministry service projects, volunteering, and mission opportunities. Train them to see the needs of society around them, and help them learn how they can make a difference. Jesus is our example of the loving shepherd who watched over His people. Caring for others is the result of a relationship with Jesus. Encourage your children and young people to first love the Lord with all of their heart and mind and soul, then teach them to live their lives in accordance with His Word. Let us give thanks for the Biblical foundation that began our nation.
