Letter from the Editor...
Do you want more from your relationship with Jesus Christ?
Maybe the problem is you aren't surrendering to His will for your life. Surrendering is scary, for it is then when we must relinquish our control and place our trust in our Lord, accepting whatever He deems necessary to make us more like Him. It will not be easy, but He promises that His grace will be enough.
"And he (Jesus) said unto me, "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:9a
Let us seek the "Higher Ground" of a closer relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy." 1 Peter 2:1-10
|
"Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness." Romans 6:16-18
I was totally inspired by the song "Higher Ground" from Majesty Music. As I thought about the words, I realized that I wanted more from my relationship with Jesus. Truly the lack was entirely my fault. I realized that I needed to lengthen my commitment, narrow my trust to Him alone, and seek Him more frequently during my day. I need to be completely dependent upon Him and not on myself.
We all have good intentions toward our Lord; planning to spend more time in prayer and Bible reading and worship. But our lives seem to take charge and before we know it, we've forgotten about our Savior.
Reaching the higher ground of a stronger relationship with Jesus requires our all. We must follow Jesus wherever He leads, unmindful of whatever will befall. We must be willing to remove the safety nets we set up for ourselves just in case our Lord doesn't come through. Then we move forward through life at our Lord's complete mercy and under His grace.
Our response is always perfect obedience and trust, ready to face whatever He allows or deems best for us. Enduring all things for the cause of Christ, adopting His values and imitating His ways, our focus on Jesus must be maintained. The truth of the Word serves as our compass, while the indwelling Holy Spirit empowers us, and leads the way, making clear our path.
"Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for He shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you." John 16:13-14
The higher ground is always one more step ahead until the summit is reached at death. Like any mountain climber knows, the journey to higher ground is slow and treacherous, becoming even harder the closer we get to the top.
Once such a commitment is made a time of testing follows as Satan tries to persuade us to turn away. To finish the race, we must endure to the end, clinging to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We are Heaven bound! There can be no turning back.
Let us hold fast the hand of Jesus that we might reach that higher ground. Let us be encouraged by His love and emboldened by His promises, rooted, built up, and established in Jesus Christ. In Him only will we succeed in our quest for the higher ground of a right relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
"As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him: rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." Colossians 2:6-7

"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." Philippians 2:5-8
If you’ve ever been in dire financial straits, then the verse: “But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19) is for you. The Apostle Paul, imprisoned in Rome, wrote this verse in a letter to the believers at Philippi in Macedonia (ancient Greece). It is a letter of encouragement and exhortation to the poverty stricken Philippian church. The Philippian believers serve as a good example to us of a very great faith in God.
While the Philippian believers were quite poor, they were not restrained from giving to others in need. On the contrary, they gave freely from their meager resources, trusting that God would supply whatever they needed. Paul knew of their sacrificial giving because he had been a personal beneficiary of their generosity. Additionally, he had received gifts from these generous people to give to the impoverished believers in Judea. Paul commends their generosity in Second Corinthians 8:1-5:
“Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; how that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; praying us with much entreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.”
What was their secret?
They first committed themselves to Jesus Christ. Then they trusted in God's provision for their needs and gave from their abundance so God could use their resources to bless others.
Did you know that the willingness to give is evidence of our love for Him?
“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?” 1 John 3:16-17
There are so many needs in our world today. In these last months, we’ve all learned how temporal our wealth really is. Many of us hoping to do our part in helping others feel torn between hoarding our resources for ourselves and supplying our resources to meet the needs of others. Paul, also understanding the instability of wealth, reminds us to focus on the things of God with this verse:
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:19-21
Hoarding never works in our favor as we discover. Things just don't last and they rarely satisfy for long. Have you ever wanted something and then after receiving it realized it didn’t really live up to your expectations? When we try to meet our needs we will be disappointed with the result.
"He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch." Proverbs 11:28
God doesn’t make that mistake. His resources are always perfect. He knows exactly what we need and when we need it. He is never late in supplying our needs nor does He give us second best. His provision is not dependent upon our lack of resources or upon how good we are. He gives us what we need because we are His.
God loves to work on our behalf. He loves to help us. He merely waits for us to vocalize our needs through prayer. Paul explains in Philippians 4:6 that we are to “be careful for nothing; but every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
Oftentimes God uses our insufficiency to draw us into a deeper faith. Paul explains the concept of faith in his letter to the Hebrews, as being “…the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1) When we see that God is faithful to meet our needs, our faith grows. We learn that God is trustworthy and that He cares for each of us individually and personally. He is not distant from those He created; instead He has an interactive relationship with us.
The Philippian believers knew that the greatest of all riches is having a personal relationship with God. Jesus confirms the promise in Matthew 6:33, when He says that if we seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, then all the things we need such as food, drink, and clothing will be supplied. It’s a promise we can count on.

“For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That
the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he
had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is
broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11: 23, 24 (KJV)
Not only was our Saviour’s body broken for us on the cross, His heart was also
broken. Marvin P. Dalton wrote a beautiful song that always brings tears to my
eyes and to my heart when I hear it “O What a Savior!” The words are so moving
and express so well what our precious Saviour endured for us “O what a Savior, O
hallelujah, His heart was broken on Calvary, His hands were nail scarred, His
side was riven, He gave His life-blood for even me.”
We have a Saviour who loves us with such a deep unconditional love that it is
impossible for us to fully comprehend how much He really does love us. What a
Saviour! What a friend, this Jesus of Nazareth! He is a friend beyond compare.
His body and His heart were broken for us on the cross because His heart is
filled with compassion and tenderness. O that you and I would love others the
way that He loves us.
“I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy
marvellous works. I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy
name, O thou most High” (Psalm 9: 1, 2). This should be the praise in every
person’s heart that has been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.
However, sometimes I think that we forget all that He has done for us. When
troubles and sorrows come our way, there are times that we stop praising Him. No
matter what happens in this life, Jesus deserves to be praised and adored all of
the time! Are you praising Him in the bad times as well as in the good times? If
you are not praising Him all of the time, then you are hurting Him and breaking
His heart once again.

Sweetly,
Lord, have we heard Thee calling,
Come, follow Me!
And we see where Thy footprints falling
Lead us to Thee.
Refrain
Footprints of Jesus,
That make the pathway glow;
We will follow the steps of Jesus
Where'er they go.
Though they lead o'er the cold, dark mountains,
Seeking His sheep;
Or along by Siloam's fountains,
Helping the weak.
Refrain
Footprints of Jesus,
That make the pathway glow;
We will follow the steps of Jesus
Where'er they go.
If they lead through the temple holy,
Preaching the Word;
Or in homes of the poor and lowly,
Serving the Lord.
Refrain
Footprints of Jesus,
That make the pathway glow;
We will follow the steps of Jesus
Where'er they go.
Though, dear Lord, in Thy pathway keeping,
We follow Thee;
Through the gloom of that place of weeping,
Gethsemane!
Refrain

HOME SCHOOL TIPS
Feeling Incompetent??
With a new school year on the immediate horizon, fear may start to raise its ugly head. It's natural to feel a bit emotional about your new journey and even to worry if you can actually homeschool your kids. When anxiety threatens to overtake you, remember the verse in Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."
What are some potential triggers of your anxiety?
* Fear the kids won't listen and won't do the work.
* Fear of failure.
* Fear of what others will think when you pull your kids out of school or don't send them.
* Fear that your kids will miss out on important information as a result of your homeschool program.
* Fear that your teaching skills will prove to be inadequate.
* Fear that your kids will hate having their mom as their teacher.
Fear Mongers: Go Away!
At first you will have to establish your authority as the teacher. Remember that you have much experience as a teacher. Who taught your child to talk or to walk or to ride a bike? Learning experiences happen as we go through our day. It is natural for kids to wonder if you are competent especially if they have experienced public or private school. In the past you did not wear the label of "teacher". Let them see your enthusiasm for learning and your knowledge and wisdom as you lead them in learning experiences.
Failure is always possible, but that also happens in public and private schools too. If you are diligent to teach and train your child, learning will take place. Think about it: to learn is to gain new information which leads to new understanding. We humans are geared by God to learn new things all the time. If your child is not showing sufficient progress, stop and review. It is probable that a key concept was not learned and you need to go back. Some children learn at a slower pace. Don't compare your children to others. Work with them where they are.
If you have made the decision to homeschool, expect questions. People are interested in homeschooling and want to know how it works and if it successful. My son's college advisor was interested in our homeschooling experience. Why? He wanted to homeschool his kids! We were asked many times if there was a school holiday when our kids accompanied me on errands during the day. I didn't have to explain, but I found that talking about our homeschool experience was a great icebreaker allowing us to make new friends. You won't please everyone, but that's okay. In time, the skeptics will see the wisdom of your family's decision.
Following a curriculum will help you stay focused and on track. Curriculums are designed to meet grade level learning goals. Some publishers, like Alpha Omega, provide placement tests to determine which level your child fits in. It has been my experience that most children who are homeschooled are ahead of their public school counterparts. If you plan to do only unit study methods, you may find supplemental lessons in math and English grammar and writing are needed. Annual assessment testing can also reveal any weaknesses your child may have in specific subjects.
In the elementary and middle school grades, your teaching skills will most likely be more than adequate to teach your curriculum. Many worry about teaching math and science and English in the later grades with good reason. If you are unable to teach the upper level subjects, you may want to trade tutoring skills with another homeschool family or hire a personal tutor. Some curriculums, such as Apologia, are designed for homeschool families who may have little formal training. Another alternative is to enroll your student in satellite classes.
Many kids enjoy homeschooling and enjoy having mom and dad as their teachers. Homeschooling affords families with lots of quality time to interact and socialize. God has purposed that parents are responsible to train their children. When we homeschool, we are obeying our Lord to teach and train our children. Not only do we have the opportunity to train our children in academic studies, but we provide training in life-changing Biblical studies and practical skills. When you hear about little children heading out to pre-K classes, crying and clinging to Mommy, you can appreciate your homeschooled children's security and contentment in learning at home. Remember to be patient and kind.
Jesus is our example as we teach by example as a doer of the Word, our standard to live by and our authority. When fear strikes a chord in your heart, remember that our Lord is able to empower and equip you to carry out His will for your child. There is no need to fear if you are diligent. You will do just fine!
