Hello!This month's issue we celebrate our betrothal to Jesus! February is the month we celebrate love, and what better way than to remember the One who loves us the most and the best! As his betrothed bride, the Church has entered into a covenant relationship with Jesus as kinsman redeemer. The story of Ruth and Boaz and the covenant relationship they entered into with Boaz Ruth and Naomi's kinsman redeemer provides a beautiful picture of the covering provided by our kinsman redeemer, and in today's time, the covering of our husband or dad. We look at specific Scriptures that edify us in our marriages, helping to build up our marriage relationship by reminding us to put aside those nitpicking bad habits. | Who Will Dwell With the Lord? |
"Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Matthew 22:37-40
David, though King of Israel, was also a psalmist. His innermost thoughts are beautifully expressed through his psalms. Much like the journaling some do today, David recorded his personal outpourings to God. One that particularly speaks to my heart is Psalm 15. David asks the age old question, "who will dwell with the Lord?"
If you ever find yourself in the position of asking someone if they know where they will spend eternity, you know answers are often varied. Some profess the heart knowledge of their position in Christ and know that they will have a place with Him. Others hope they will have a place in heaven, but they do not really know where it is or what is required to get there. Others will tell you straight up that they do not believe in eternity; this life is all there is.
David knew the Lord God Jehovah, the Father of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He had experienced God's intervention in his life, God's protection, God's provision, and God's deliverance. Yet he still pondered who would be worthy to dwell with the Lord.
Psalm 15:1 asks the question, "Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill?"
The following verses answer the question...
(verse 2) "He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart".
If we were to consider this verse, we would have to define the words "walketh uprightly". What do they mean? How do we measure up? Walking uprightly means walking in the ways of the Lord, obeying His laws and commands. Do we consistently walk uprightly in all our ways? Our actions expose our heart's condition. Where do we fall short?
The following two thoughts, "worketh righteousness" and "speaketh the truth in his heart" narrow down the meaning "walketh uprightly". To walk uprightly, one must work righteousness. Do you know what is righteous? Can you distinguish between good and evil? Have you called evil good, and good evil? Think about it.
Have you ever noticed how a person who is lying shifts his eyes to the left? We can fool people with a lie, but God who sees the heart teaches us to train ourselves to be honest by practicing honesty from the heart. Out of the heart proceeds the vileness of sin. If you have a habit of disguising the truth of your motives or denying your sin, then you need to learn to speak the truth in your heart. For how can you come to repentance over sin, if you refuse to acknowledge it?
(verse 3) "He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbor, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor.".
This is a difficult one to overcome, for our human nature tends to take offense at the slightest assault against our person. Pride surfaces and we instantly "go to guns". This verse encompasses the seven things the Lord hates, found in Proverbs 6:16-19:
"These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren."
I believe that all of these are things we do to others. Do you love others? We take up a reproach against another out of malice, jealousy, desire to retain power and control, or to cover our own unworthiness. I think all of us could say that there are those times when our lack of love for others is showing.
Driving down the highway, it is easy to become angry and outraged. Lying to protect yourself or to make yourself look better than you are is a response of pride, and the natural man's attempts to avoid exposure. Sometimes half-truths or just a choice comment can cast a bit of doubt about another, sowing discord and division. Someone's reputation is instantly damaged or destroyed. Have you noticed that seeds of doubt and false accusation are rarely out in the open where they can be addressed. False accusation leads to the shedding of innocent blood. Judging others with biased facts or without facts is a form of "devising wicked imaginations". Taking up a reproach against someone without cause is a serious breach.
We are commanded to love our neighbor. Let us remember the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance, counteracts these hateful practices we do so easily. Jesus said, "But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them."
(verse 4) "In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoreth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not."
Who are your heroes? Do you honor those who are righteous in the Lord or are you following after someone whose lifestyle and principles do not line up with Scripture? If we look to humans, we will find disappointment and disillusionment. The Bible tells us that "...all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). The Bible says in Proverbs 12:11b that "he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding." Honor those that fear the Lord. Stand for what is righteous and true. Vote your convictions. Refuse the profane. Recognize sin for what it is, rather than glossing over it or excusing it. Teach your children what a true hero is. Show them the truth about their television, movie, and music star heroes. Set the example in your home by rejecting the vain and profane.
(verse 5) "He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved."
Usury is interest. When we think of interest, we think of what we pay extra on a loan. The Bible forbid the Hebrew people from charging interest: "Thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of vituals, usury of any things that is lent upon usury" (Deuteronomy 23:19. Usury takes advantage of others. It is an unfortunate practice in our time and an error in our thinking that we practice usury. There is an unspoken rule that says every act of kindness must be repaid in kind. If you get a gift, you must give a gift. Invite someone to dinner, and you expect an invitation back. Have someone perform a favor and our standard response is "I owe you one!". The Bible says in Luke 6:35b, "...lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest". Pride prohibits us from being good receivers. Yet, we must also be careful to avoid taking advantage of the kindness of others.
Like most of us, you may see areas that need improvement after reading this psalm. No one is righteous the Bible tells us. But we are not without hope, for we have a Savior, Jesus Christ, God's Son who died on a cross and rose from the grave, buying our pardon with His blood, and redeeming us for God's Kingdom. Every sin can be forgiven and will be forgiven if you confess your sins and seek forgiveness. Then follow that with the action of forsaking sin. Allow God to cleanse your heart and mind, for we know the unrighteous will not dwell with the Lord God Jehovah. He is perfect and can not look upon sin. While we can not make ourselves worthy of His Kingdom, Jesus can and will if we will call upon His name.
"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God." 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
And this is his commandment, that we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love another, as he gave us commandment.

Numbers 15:37-40
A Story of Covering
"And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down. And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet. And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman. And he said, Blessed be thou of the Lord, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich. And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman." Ruth 3:7-11
This passage is from the Book of Ruth, the story of a Jewish woman called Naomi and her daughter-in-law, Ruth. Both widowed, Naomi returns to her homeland of Judah, with Ruth as her constant companion. With no sons or husbands to provide for them, the women are destitute. However, their story is not over, for Hebrew Law provides them with a kinsman redeemer, a near male relative that will take on the responsibility of these women. The role of kinsman redeemer is one of deliverer, protector, and provider. A kinsman redeemer redeemed property by paying the required ransom.
Naomi and Ruth were in bondage to their poverty, unable to work or to buy and sell property. Without a father, husband, or a son to care for them, they were at the mercy of others. Naomi understood that only a marriage for Ruth could save them, for the husband of Ruth would naturally take care of Naomi. A marriage would place the women under the covering of a husband, whose duty it would be to care for the women.
Boaz was a near relative of Naomi, and aside from another, was the likely choice for a husband for Ruth. Naomi was a wily lady who knew that Ruth had found favor with Boaz. He had allowed her to glean grain from his fields, and even made sure that grain was left in ample supply for her and Naomi. Hence he had already proven himself worthy as a provider and protector. The question was, would he be a worthy deliverer?
When Ruth went into Boaz and slept at his feet, she put him and herself in a compromising situation. She trusted that Boaz was a righteous man and would do the righteous thing, once he understood their situation.
She was not wrong. Given no dispute with the other near kinsman, Boaz agreed to be their kinsman redeemer. He was prepared to redeem all that belonged to Naomi, including marrying Ruth. In effect he purchased Naomi and Ruth's land, inherited from their husbands, purchased Ruth to be his wife, and in accordance with Deuteronomy 25:6, agreed that their firstborn son would take the name of her deceased husband so that his name and heritage would continue.
After the marriage, when Ruth conceived, Naomi became the baby's nurse, and the baby was called Obed. Obed fathered Jesse, who fathered King David. Joseph and Jesus also were of the lineage of David.
The Modern Day Covering of Marriage
The Bible speaks of coming under the shadow of God's wing. The wing is where the mother bird shelters her babies. What a beautiful picture of a husband's care and love for his wife.
"Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings," Psalm 17:8
Wives, our husbands serve as our covering, much like Boaz. When we enter into the covenant marriage relationship, we are placing ourselves under the sheltering of our husband. Husbands afford protection, provision, and deliverance.
As head of the household, he will stand before God to give an account of his household. He is commissioned to care for his wife, else his prayers will be hindered. 1 Peter 3:7 teaches us:
"Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered."
Many women today do not feel the need for a covering. They are independent women of the world.
Marriage between a man and a woman is God's plan, and serves as the foundation for a family. The hierarchy of the family is established by God with husbands as the final authority, wives submitting to their decisions, and children honoring and respecting their parents, coming under their authority.
How blessed we are to have first the covering of our dads, and then the covering of our husband. A woman who never marries remains under the covering of her father. Once married, a woman moves under the covering of her husband. A woman is never left without a covering.
Numbers 30 explains a little more about the authority given to dads and husbands who have the rule over their households. If a daughter or a wife makes a vow, it shall stand. However a dad or a husband has the right to overrule the vow. As a daughter in the household of her dad, her dad may overrule his daughter's vow. Or if she is in the household of her husband, the husband may overrule it. This is a blessing and a protection for a daughter or a wife.
Christian's Covenant Covering of Jesus
It is also a beautiful picture of the relationship between Jesus and His Bride, the Church.
As believers, we come under the rule of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we are His betrothed bride. Remember betrothal in Biblical times was actually a legal marriage, as yet unconsummated. The Church is the betrothed bride of Christ, purchased with the blood of Jesus, and thereby redeemed from the rule of Satan.
The Church is under the covering of Jesus, forever delivered, protected, and provided for, awaiting and watching for His return. Jesus' covering is sufficient to meet our every need. He never forsakes His own. He laid down His life for His beloved.

HOME SCHOOL TIPS
OVERCOMING HOMESCHOOLING HINDRANCES
HINDRANCE #1 COST OF CURRICULUM
One of the biggest drawbacks for many families who wish to homeschool is the cost of curriculum. For families with several children at varying grade levels, homeschooling may seem out of reach. When we began our homeschool journey years ago, we too were feeling the pinch of trying to make ends meet. New to homeschooling, we didn't even know where to begin to find the resources we needed. Let me share with you some of the things we've learned since then...
*Find inexpensive curriculum can seem rather daunting, but not when you have the Internet handy. There are many companies that offer recycled curriculum. Here are several that I have found:
*Best Homeschool Buys offers discounted and used homeschool curriculum. These folks are veteran homeschoolers of 25 years!
*Used Homeschool Curriculum offers a free forum for buying and selling curriculum, plus a "want to buy" section.
*Check out E-bay for good bargains:
*Trade with other homeschooling families.
*Shop early in the Spring for the coming year, and receive huge discounts from select publishers.
HINDRANCE #2 DISCIPLINE ISSUES
Getting children to do their work can be difficult if the child is resistant or has a bad attitude. Bad behavior habits do not change overnight. Change will require prayer, identifying your parental inconsistencies, and making sure that negative behaviors are counterproductive to the child.
Discipline should be swift and consistent. Oftentimes, we parents send a mixed message with inconsistent discipline. If you say it, enforce it. If you can not enforce it, do not say it.
A good friend reminded me that when our kids fail, we must be careful not to throw out the kid with the bathwater. They had been coping with rebellious teens, but through their journey they learned that love must remain intact. We all fail, but failure should not cause broken relationships. Practice forgiveness, mercy, and kindness. While teaching may take center stage, remember you are also a mom or a dad that children look to.
A child who is fearful of failure will be difficult to engage in learning. Withdrawal is common, along with a wounded spirit. Hurt pride and fear of failure will hold a child back. When your child fails at a task, it's not the end of the world. Try a fresh approach later. Reward every success no matter how small.
Choose your battles carefully. Do not worry about childish behavior that will correct itself as they get older. Choose instead to work on character issues, their work ethic, and confidence levels.
HINDRANCE #3 THE DISINTERESTED CHILD
The old saying about leading a horse to water is pretty good, until you realize that while the horse may be standing in front of the water, he refuses to drink. A wise sage commented that a horse will drink if he's thirsty, so give him a bit of salt.
A child that has no interest in learning or studying is not engaged in the process. This child has no ownership. Find something that your child is interested in and use that as a springboard to learning. This is not easy because we have to let go of our expectations and our plans. The idea is to help your child become excited about learning.
Some kids struggle to accomplish anything. Lower your expectations until they are succeeding, then enthusiastically praise them. The next day or week raise the bar a little higher so they can succeed again.
Kids need to have deadlines. Set up a schedule so they know when each study time ends. Set a timer or have a clock visible so they can monitor their time. Give them a 5 minute warning when class is ending. When that time ends, class is over and work should be finished or reserved for catch-up time after all studies are complete.
Let your kids help you around the house with chores. Young children especially love helping. Helping with chores enables them to feel that they have an important role in the family. Reward their efforts with a smile and verbal thanks. Let them know how valuable their help is to the family. You would be amazed at how much learning you can incorporate into daily conversations, chores, crafts, etc.
All of us parents make mistakes in training and teaching our children. Thank goodness we have a loving Lord who can repair our damage! Trust God to help you to make a positive difference in your child. Seek His guidance and help in dealing with the difficulties of homeschooling. Having your child in the home already provides your child with a huge advantage for spiritual well-being and training, as well as having a quality education.

Small recipe:
3 oz. cream cheese
2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
flavorings and food colorings
candy molds for the candies
Cream the cheese until soft. Add the sugar and mix to a dough consistency.
Flavor to taste and color as desired. Dip the molds in granulated sugar and out
the excess. Press dough into the molds. Press the candy out of the molds
onto waxed paper. After they have dried a little, they may be kept in the
freezer until needed.
***For a larger recipe use these measurements:
8 oz. cream cheese
2 lbs. powdered sugar
flavorings and colorings
Tips for flavoring or coloring:
Red coloring is usually associated with cinnamon flavorings or peppermint
Green coloring is associated with wintergreen or mint flavorings
Yellow coloring is associated with maple flavoring or lemon
***These are delicious and are so pretty when decorated. Serve on a glass tray.

1 can Dole pineapple juice
6 cups water
juice of two lemons
5 bananas, pureed in blender
1 large can frozen orange juice
4 cups sugar
2-3 bottles of ginger ale.
Heat water, sugar, and mix with all the remaining ingredients except the ginger
ale. About thirty minutes before serving, put frozen mixture into punch bowl.
Pour ginger ale over the mixture, stirring until it has melted into slush.
Serves approximately 50.
***A wonderful addition to your party that everyone will love. The bananas
keep it from being too acidic.
