Letter from the Editor...

Hello!This month we celebrate Mother's Day. This is the time to honor our beloved mothers for all they do for us. Let us thank our Lord for them and for placing us in their care. To a mother, a child is always a child. We mothers must rejoice in the families that God has given us. Let us pray for His continued guidance, wisdom, and grace as we minister to our families. This month is also the National Day of Prayer. However there has been much controversy. It has become clear that Christians who dare to speak the truth are unwelcome. *Let us covenant to make every day, a day of prayer. Some have called upon us to fast and pray for our nation. *Let us be diligent to seek our Lord with all of our heart, mind, soul, and spirit. *Let us be vigilant to keep ourselves pure and holy, and to obey Him in all things. This month's issue features an article about the Emergent Church Movement. I believe you will find it enlightening. Begin Words of Encouragement by clicking to continue for the first article... or just scroll down to In This Issue. Enjoy! Linda

"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy." 1 Peter 2:1-10

In recent years a new way of thinking and interpreting the Bible has crept into churches. It is subtle, often undetected for what it is, and is usually widely accepted by the uninformed. It is called the emergent church movement. The signature teachings of the emergent church movement conflict with the truths of God's Word, leading many to embrace doctrinal error that will affect one's understanding of the salvation message.
Scot McKnight, a member of the Emergent Church Movement, in his article, "Five Streams of the Emerging Church" in "Christianity Today" describes the key elements of the emergent church movement. These five streams identify basic tenets of belief which we will find form the basis of the conflict with orthodox Christianity.
*The first is prophetic rhetoric. This is characterized by provocative, sometimes divisive speech that signals their belief that the church needs a drastic change from the traditional Evangelicalism. McKnight says, "...they are beginning to live as if that change had already occurred."
*The second stream is postmodernism. Specifically this is a rejection of the concept of absolute truth and consequently absolute moral standards. This is particularly evident in those who minister as postmoderns.
*The third stream is praxis-oriented. "Praxis" means practical application. Hence according to McKnight the emergent church movement seeks to develop a new doctrine of the church as expressed through worship, "right living" (orthopraxy), and missional work "by participating with God in the redemptive work of God in this world." Social justice, mysticism, ancient worship forms, and inclusiveness are some of the themes being embraced.
*The fourth stream is post-evangelical. This means a distancing from mainstream Evangelical Christianity, rejecting systematic theology or more accurately, a dogmatic theology.
*The fifth is political. McKnight assures us that by political, he means that many are liberal or Democratic as opposed to conservative or the Religious Right.
To understand how the emergent church movement differs from orthodox Christianity, one must look to the proponents of the movement. The most visible is Brian McLaren who is the author of several books that discuss the tenets of the emergent church movement. He is also active in a number of organizations such as the Emergent Village community. Add to the list, Dallas Willard and Richard Foster, mentors of the emergent church movement, who promote contemplative spirituality/mysticism. Rick Warren has joined the group, introducing CSM to his congregation. Other notables include Tony Jones, National Coordinator of Emergent; Leonard Sweet, Professor at Drew University; and Rob Bell, pastor of Mars Hill Bible Church.
Following are affiliates of the Emergent Village who have provided financial support in 2009 as listed on the Emergent Village website:
Let's look more closely at some of the more alarming concepts...
Universal Salvation for Everyone
In the November/December 2009 issue of the "Baptist Bulletin", Bruce A. Sabados explains in his article, "Brian McLaren's Emerging Universalism" that Brian McLaren is "largely responsible for the international spread of emergent ideas." Mr. Sabados alerts us to the most alarming teaching of the emergent church. That is the belief in a universal salvation for everyone. Ultimately no one will be barred from receiving eternal life according to McLaren who rejects the Biblical concept of individual repentance and faith preferring a corporate inclusive salvation that surely God would not deny to anyone.
This is in direct conflict with the Scriptures which teaches that there is a coming judgment and punishment. Consider these teachings from God's Word:
"The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished" 2 Peter 2:9
"And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power" 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9
We know from reading the Bible that there is a clear distinction between those who have accepted Jesus as God's Son and Savior. The crux of the Gospel message is those who will recognize their sin, repent from their sin, and trust that Jesus' death on a cross paid the price for sin that God's Law demands, will be rewarded with forgiveness of sin and will receive a place in God's Kingdom in Heaven. They will be adopted into God's family, called His children, and will be joint-heirs with Jesus. They will live eternally in the presence of God and Jesus.
Those who reject Jesus (as the only way to receive salvation from the punishment of sin) will be eternally separated from God and ultimately cast into the Lake of Fire for everlasting punishment.
"And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." Revelation 20:15
Let us also be reminded that God wants all to come to repentance and accept the gift of salvation through Jesus. He does not want anyone to perish the Bible says. However, all who enter in must come by way of Jesus. There is no other means by which man may be saved.
Inclusion of Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism
Andy Crouch in his article, "The Emergent Mystique" in "Christianity Today," comments that Dallas Willard and Richard Foster are "key mentors" of the Movement. They are responsible for the current trend in contemplative spirituality/mysticism (CSM) and the emphasis on the spiritual disciplines. Foster is best known for his book, "Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth", which has been well received, but unfortunately is filled with error.
Willard and Foster are proponents of spiritual experiences fostered by participation in spiritual disciplines they have developed. Pastor Ken Silva of Apprising Ministries has done extensive study on exposing the error behind Willard's and Foster's teachings. For example, in his book, "The Spirit of the Disciplines," Willard itemizes an exhausting list of disciplines that supposedly help us move toward spiritual perfection. However, Silva quotes DeWaay's comment in his article "Which Spiritual Disciplines?": "The spiritual disciplines that are supposedly necessary for spiritual formation are not defined in the Bible."
Silva's exposure of unbiblical teaching continues with a beginning quote from Willard followed by comments from DeWaay:
“This factual priority of solitude is, I believe, a sound element in monastic asceticism. Locked into interaction with the human beings that make up our fallen world, it is all but impossible to grow in grace as one should.” So if we cannot grow in grace without solitude, how come the Bible never commands us to practice solitude? The same goes for many other items on Willard’s list."
Contrary to Biblical teaching, we find works added to the Biblical truth of salvation by grace alone. One theory is that by participating in spiritual experiences we can position ourselves to create "space" for God in our life so that we can be more receptive to God. Unfortunately, this could be fraught with dangers of demonic influence:
"When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first." Matthew 12:43-45a
We are commanded to take every thought captive, to consciously think on things that are pure, good, righteous, etc. We are not commanded in the Bible to empty our minds and distance ourselves from reality so we can commune with God in the spiritual realm.
Postmodernism
Before you reject the absolute truths of the Bible, consider this verse: "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." Proverbs 14:12
I believe the Bible is the infallible, inerrant, and inspired Word of God. It contains absolute truth that we can rely on to guide us in daily life. We know the character of God is one of order, not chaos or confusion. He has given us His Word so that we might know Him and know His Law and accept His son, Jesus, as our Savior and Lord over our life.
Dogmatic truth from God's Word provides a sure foundation upon which to base our life. It is unchanging and has remained unchanged throughout the centuries. The Emergent Church Movement questions the validity of absolute truth from God's Word. In their eyes, Scripture is only true if it's true for you. Therefore truth is relative. In their quest to adapt Scripture to the culture, they have surely compromised the Word.
The question is if you cannot trust God, why should you trust man?
Conclusion...
The Emergent Church Movement would have us to believe that the Bible is unreliable and is an inadequate testimony of God. They would have us place our trust in our spiritual experiences versus the truth of God's Word. A spiritual experience is more reliable and believable than a Scriptural or Biblical means of discovering God they suggest. They believe their spiritual experiences will ultimately lead to a universal salvation that says all ways to lead to God. To think otherwise is judgmental, intolerant, and divisive.
We can be thankful that the Bible is clear that Jesus is the only way to salvation. We are saved by grace through faith. Let us be careful not to let anyone rob us of our sure foundation.
"That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." John 3:15-19

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us." 1 John 1:9-10
MUSINGS...
"Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired; before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the Lord come upon you, before the day of the Lord's anger come upon you.
Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger." Zephaniah 2:1-3
"In Judah is God known: His name is great in Israel. In Salem also is His tabernacle, and His dwelling place in Zion.
There brake He the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah.
Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey.
The stout-hearted are spoiled, they have slept their sleep: and none of the men of might have found their hands. At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.
Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in Thy sight when once Thou art angry?
Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still, when God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah.
Surely the wrath of man shall praise Thee: the remainder of wrath shalt Thou restrain.
Vow, and pay unto the Lord your God: let all that be round about Him bring presents unto Him that ought to be feared. He shall cut off the spirit of princes: He is terrible to the kings of the earth." Psalm 76

"And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in Him." 1 John 2:3-4
After a long, cold, snowy winter, I’m ready for warmth and spring! Even 60 degrees feels warm! I am constantly amazed at how everything knows when to unfold to begin the process of new life once again.
Sitting outside enjoying the sunshine and the warmth of the air, I hear the bees buzzing around my head and the birds venting their wrath over intruders in their space. Not exactly peaceful, but the scene fills my heart with praise for my Lord. What a wonderful creation is our world and all that is in it! Even the birds and animals rejoice at the new season and the promise it holds.
The intricacies of gardening overwhelm me, but He knew what kind of soil to create, and which of His flowers would grow best. He knows when to prune the wayward shoots that threaten the life of that tree, and when to prop up that staggering plant whose stem is so long. What must Eden have been like? My gardening skills cannot compare!
Each blossom bears the promise of provision. Each leaf demonstrates His protection of the vulnerable. Bathed in the sweet scent of flowers, my spirit is uplifted for their fragrance is a balm to my soul. The Light of His love has come into the world, and I am reminded of His gift of eternal life and the cleansing away of my sin.
Spring is the time for refreshment after the long winter. It is a time of renewal and rejoicing, for He is ever faithful, and life continues under His guiding hand.
Prayer of Praise:
Oh Lord, how majestic is thy name in all of the earth! Thy wonders unfold before me, reminding me of your power. Yet I see too your mercy and grace as you renew and replenish the earth. I am reminded that you are the Master Shepherd who watches vigilantly over His flock. Your love and kindness is evident to me. I sense your presence and I worship you, for your works are mighty.

“I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.” Song of Solomon 2: 1
My favorite flower is a red rose. It is beautiful and it smells so sweet just as Jesus is beautiful and sweet. I love the words to this inspiring song that Edward Mote wrote “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus Name. On Christ the Solid Rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand; All other ground is sinking sand.” Every time I sing this song or hear it, I am reminded of the faithfulness and beauty of Jesus.
The greatest Christian is only a sinner who has been saved by God’s grace and by the precious cleansing and atoning blood of our risen Saviour. We must keep our eyes on Jesus and trust in Him and not in people. We need to anchor ourselves to the solid Rock, the Lord Jesus Christ. One of the definitions for hope in Webster’s Dictionary is “to expect with confidence”. We can trust Jesus to protect us. He will be faithful to heal our hearts and dry our tears with His tender kisses when satan hurls his poisonous darts of discouragement, criticism, and judgment at us.
There are times that instead of putting our trust in Jesus we put our trust in people and then we wonder why we get hurt. We should never put our trust in anyone other than Jesus. He will never hurt us and He will never fail us. What He tells us we can rely on and we can take it to the bank. Our precious Saviour is trustworthy and it is always safe to trust Him. Indeed, Jesus is our flower of hope. Have you put your trust in Him?
Has there ever been a time when you invited the Christ of Calvary into your heart? If not, please don’t put it off. You may not have another day or even another hour to live. Swallow your pride, admit that you are a sinner, ask God to forgive you for your sins and ask Jesus to come into your heart to be your personal Saviour before it is too late. Your family and friends can’t do it for you as much as they want to do it. Salvation is a personal issue between you and Jesus. Will you open your heart to the Saviour of the world who loves you so much that He died for you on a cruel cross of horror and agony?

"Inspired by great-grandmother's scrapbook, compiled before 1918."
St. Stephen
By Abram Joseph Ryan
First champion of the Crucified!
Who, when the fight began
Between the Church and worldly pride
So nobly fought, so nobly died,
The foremost in the van;
While rallied to your valiant side
The red-robed martyr-band;
To-night with glad and high acclaim
We venerate thy saintly name;
Accept, Saint Stephen, to thy praise
And glory, these our lowly lays.
The chosen twelve with chrismed hand
And burning zeal within,
Led forth their small yet fearless band
On Pentecost, and took their stand
Against the world and sin --
While rang aloud the battle-cry:
"The hated Christians all must die!
As died the Nazarene before,
The God they believe in and adore."
Yet Stephen's heart quailed not with fear
At persecution's cry;
But loving, as he did, the cause
Of Jesus and His faith and laws,
Prepared himself to die.
He faced his foes with burning zeal,
Such zeal as only saints can feel;
He told them how the Lord had stood
Within their midst, so great and good,
How he had through Judea trod,
How wonders marked his way -- the God,
How he had cured the blind, the lame,
The deaf, the palsied, and the maimed,
And how, with awful, wondrous might,
He raised the dead to life and light;
And how his people knew Him not --
Had eyes and still had seen Him not,
Had ears and still had heard Him not,
Had hearts and comprehended not.
Then said he, pointing to the right,
Where darkly rose Golgotha's height:
"There have ye slain the Holy One,
Your Saviour and God's only Son."
They gnashed their teeth in raging ire,
Those dark and cruel men;
They vowed a vengeance deep and dire
Against Saint Stephen then.
Yet he was calm; a radiant light
Around his forehead gleamed;
He raised his eyes, a wondrous sight
He saw, so grand it was and bright,
His soul was filled with such delight
That he an angel seemed.
Then spoke the Saint: "A vision grand
Bursts on me from above:
The doors of heaven open stand,
And at the Father's own right hand
I see the Lord I love."
"Away with him," the rabble cry,
With swelling rage and hate,
But Stephen still gazed on the sky,
His heart was with his Lord on high,
He heeded not his fate.
The gathering crowd in fury wild
Rush on the 'raptured Saint,
And seize their victim, mute and mild,
Who, like his master, though reviled,
Still uttered no complaint.
With angry shouts they rend the air;
They drag him to the city gate;
They bind his hands and feet and there,
While whispered he for them a prayer,
The martyr meets his fate.
First fearless witness to his belief
In Jesus Crucified,
The red-robed martyrs' noble chief,
Thus for his Master died.
And to the end of time his name
Our Holy Church shall e'er proclaim,
And with a mother's pride shall tell
How her great proto-martyr fell.
* The word "chrismed" is a real word derived from chrism, meaning "annointed" in this poem. Chrism is a mixture of oil used to annoint.

"Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also." 1 John 2:22-23
HOME SCHOOL TIPS
Modeling Righteousness
We all want pleasant, compliable kids, but the reality is that our kids are not perfect. Nor are we. Being home together 24/7 can present challenges many parents do not experience. Constant contact can breed conflict between parents and child and between siblings. Left unresolved, conflict will escalate into major relationship dysfunctions. Your children are watching you. They will imitate your behavior. Behaviors are often passed down from generation to generation. Let your legacy be one of righteousness. Commit yourself today to break bad habits and begin to foster new patterns of communication and behavior.
How do you cope with anger?
I am reminded of the Ephesians 4:26 verse: "Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath." These are wise words from Paul who recognized the necessity of resolving anger quickly. Do not let your anger continue to another day. Resolve it quickly or it will become a root of bitterness. Learn to forgive quickly, preferring to overlook an offense.
What motivates you?
Are your actions motivated by a desire to please God? Sometimes it is easy to begin to feel overused by all those around you. You begin to nurture a spirit of resentment. Your mind is in replay mode. The offense is relived over and over again. Instead follow Paul's instructions in 2 Corinthians 10:5: "casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." Be quick to forgive those who have slighted you. Refuse to allow sin to take root in your heart. Purify your thoughts. Think on what is true, for oftentimes, our resentments are misplaced and fabricated in our minds. Be motivated by a desire to please God in all you do.
Are you a manipulator?
How easy it can be to maneuver someone into a situation of our choosing. Do not be guilty of manipulations. Do not use guilt to gain cooperation. Do not use comparisons with another child as a means to exhort a child to do better. The silent treatment is an inappropriate punishment. Be honest and forthright in all of your ways.
Do not make threats to enlist your child's cooperation. Explain penalties for misbehavior and carry them out quickly. Keep your promises. It is unworthy to use manipulations to get our way. Consider these wise words from James 5:12: "But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation."
Watch what you say!
Kids listen to our words and copy them. If you've ever listened in on a child's play, you may be surprised to hear a perfect imitation of your tone, cadence, and words. Keep your words honest, pure, and kind. Avoid confrontational statements such as: "I knew you wouldn't get it" or "you didn't try hard enough" or "did you hear me?". These are unproductive and usually lead to arguments and disputes, not to mention totally discouraging your child. Nothing good is accomplished by picking a fight.
Use words that encourage and build up. Keep your word.
"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer." Psalm 19:14
Praise and Reward!
Praise your kids every chance you get! Praise teaches your children what is acceptable and praiseworthy. Everyone loves receiving positive feedback. Let your children know when they do something good and righteous. Reward good work with praise and recognition of a job well done. Keep the tangible rewards simple or they will begin to only work for the reward. A pat on the back is a huge encouragement to a struggling child. Finding favor with Mom and Dad is a great motivator.
Thoughts to ponder...
If your child is being willfully disobedient, do not take it personally. Recognize it as a manipulation to get what they want. Consider the intent of the heart. Work on character issues that are causing disobedience. Teach your child that disobedience brings negative consequences. Make sure your correction is appropriate for the offense.
You and your spouse may want to establish a series of "family rules". Don't be petty. Establish these as family laws, much as God gives us the Ten Commandments. Write them down and post them with the pre-determined correction if the rule is broken.
Learning to love your neighbor (in this case your family members) as yourself is a command. We parents can teach our children how to love others and to show respect and consideration by our example. Let us covenant to model righteousness!
"But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace." James 3:17-18

"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin. Whosoever abidth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither known Him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous." 1 John 3:4-7
THOUGHT PROVOKERS"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is. And every man that hath this hope in Him purifieth himself, even as He is pure." 1 John 3:2-3
Excerpt from The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges...
"Because God is holy, He cannot ever tempt us to sin. "When tempted, no one should say, 'God is tempting me.' For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone" (James 1:13). Probably none of us ever imagines that God is actively soliciting us to do evil, but we may feel that God has put us in a situation where we have no choice.
King Saul felt this way in his first major campaign against the Philistines (1 Samuel 13). Before going into battle Saul was to wait seven days for the Prophet Samuel to come and offer a burnt offering and ask the favor of the Lord. Saul waited the seven days for Samuel. When he didn't come, Saul became anxious and took it on himself to offer the burnt offering. Saul felt he had no alternative. The people were fearful and had begun to scatter; the Philistines were assembling for battle; Samuel was overdue. Something had to be done! God had put him in a place where he had no choice, it seemed, but to disobey God's explicit instructions.
But because Saul disobeyed God's express will, he lost his kingdom (1 Samuel 13:13-14). What about us? Do we sometimes feel we have no choice but to shade the truth a little, or commit just a slightly dishonest act? When we feel this way, we are in effect saying that God is tempting us to sin, that He has put us in a position where we have no alternative" (p. 30-31).

nice shell. Pile slices of turkey into bottom of roll. Add vegetable
medley. Top with cheese slice. Broil or microwave until cheese
melts. Recap with roll top.
Reduce the fat content when you fry or bake by spraying your cooking oil spray on a paper towel. Then wipe the pan with the paper towel, coating it evenly. There will be no excess of cooking oil in the bottom of the pan to settle on your food.
