"Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?"  Galatians 4:16

  Letter from the Editor...

Hello!

 November is an exciting month for it is the beginning of the holiday season.  It is a season of family gatherings, delicious meals, but most of all it is a remembrance of our Lord and His blessings.

Let us rejoice in the many blessings our Lord has bestowed upon us!

Let us cultivate a renewed sense of thanksgiving, a humbled spirit of repentance, and a rising expectation of His coming!

Invite Him into your life today.  Allow Him to hold the place of honor in your heart.  Fill your mind with His promises, so you may resist the evil that surrounds.

Praise Him for all your trials and troubles.  Praise Him for the solutions that only He can give.

We give thanks in the name of Jesus...

Not everyone feels like praising and giving thanks.  Many are going through terrible trials and tribulations and wonder where is God.  When life is overwhelming we must praise Him.

"Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of.  For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ."  2 Corinthians 1:3-5

The Believer's Mission...

"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy."

1 Peter 2:1-10

Finding Faith

"And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful?  How is it that ye have no faith?"  Mark 4:40

Jesus asked this question of His disciples.  He asks it of us as well.

In context, the verse is in response to the disciples fear of a storm.  They feared for their lives.

"And the same day, when the even was come, He saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.  And when they had sent away the multitude, they took Him even as He was in the ship.  And there were also with Him other little ships.  And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.  And He was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow:  and they awake Him, and say unto Him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?  And He arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace be still.  And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.  And He said unto them, Why are ye so fearful?  How is it that ye have not faith?  And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"  Mark 4:35-41

The amazement of Jesus is not feigned.  The disciples had been with Him.  They had seen the miracles He performed.  How could they be fearful if He could bring about such miraculous demonstrations of His power?  The miracles demonstrated His power over life.  His deliverance in the ship demonstrated His power over all of creation.  How could they be fearful when they were with Jesus?

Their words were rather telling of their mindset.  "Master, carest thou not that we perish?"  They thought they would die.  They thought He did not care about them.

How many times do we think that our Lord does not care about us?  Every time we have sufferings, deaths, circumstances out of control, or any other fearful time, we think He does not care.

The number one question people ask about God is "does He exist?"  The next important question people ask about God is "why does He allow suffering?"  They think He doesn't care.

We have so much more proof that God cares than His disciples.  We have His Word.  We have the Holy Spirit living in our heart.  We have the testimony of others and our own testimony of His love and care.

Where is our faith?

Do you know people are more willing to believe their best friends than to believe God's Word?  People are more willing to rely on their own wisdom and knowledge and understanding than to wait upon God's intervention and direction.

Where is our faith?

Are we believers so without faith that when troubles come, we have no root to endure?  Is our faith so shallow?

The answer is yes.  Our faith is shallow because we are lazy.  We have bought the lie that God's Word is not true or that it is open to our private interpretation or that there are no absolutes we can believe.  We have compromised ourselves to the point that we no longer pay attention to the Holy Spirit who lives in our heart.  How small is our faith when it is dependent upon our expectations and desires being met exactly as we wish them to be.  When trials come, we will surely fall.

FINDING FAITH...

*Romans 10:17 says:  "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

If your faith is small, you must get into the Word of God.  You must learn its lessons and apply them to your life.  You must study and study and study coupled with prayer.  You must beg God to give you understanding and keep begging until it begins to make sense.

*James 1:2-3 says:  "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience."

Do you know that if you remain steadfast in your belief in the Savior despite your trial and suffering, that your faith will grow stronger?  Experiences in trials and tribulations teaches us that God is faithful.  He is trustworthy.  We can depend on Him to carry out His will in us.

*1 Peter 1:6-9 says:  "Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:  that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:  whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see Him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:  receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls."

Our faith is constantly being tested and tried, enabling us to remain in faith until death when we will be with Jesus.  Our trials reveal the measure of our faith.  Yet by our faith, we bring honor and glory and praise unto our Lord.

*1 Peter 5:6-10 says:  "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time:  casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:  whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.  But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you."

Satan seeks to destroy what little faith we have.  He makes it his purpose to bring doubt and distrust to our minds.  Left unchallenged, it will take root in our hearts and we will be destroyed.  Peter cautions us to be vigilant so Satan does not gain a foothold.  We must rebuke the untrue thoughts of doubt in our minds and refuse to believe them.  Encourage and strengthen yourself by meditating on the Word.  Yet in the midst of our trials, let us remember that there is an end in sight.  Our Lord will perfect our faith and will strengthen us and establish us in His Kingdom.

*James 2:26 says:  "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."

You can measure your own faith by your level of obedience to God's commands.  Do you trust Him?  Do you trust His commands?  Do you trust the outcome of your obedience?  If you are a Believer, then you should trust God in all things.  Your trust is evidenced by your obedience and proves your faith.

*Matthew 17:20-21 says:  "And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief:  for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting."

In this verse Jesus is explaining to His disciples why they could not cast out a demon from a child.  He said they did not have enough faith.  In particular, in a following verse, He tells them the demon would only leave after prayer and fasting.  Many people assume they must have great faith to overcome life's tragedies and trials.  If that were true Jesus would not have said faith the size of a mustard seed was enough to move mountains.  A mustard seed is the tiniest of seeds.  I have never moved a mountain, so therefore my faith is even smaller than a mustard seed, and so is yours.  Another point that Jesus brings up is that while we have a measure of faith, we still must sometimes labor in prayer and fasting.  That is a demonstration of a determined faith.

It takes very little faith to believe in God.  The tiniest bit of faith in Him is enough to be saved and enough to get us through life.

"For the Lord will not cast off for ever:  but though He cause grief, yet will He have compassion according to the multitude of His mercies.  For He doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men."  Lamentations 3:31-33

   MUSINGS...A season of thanksgiving and atonement

"And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not make clean riddance of the corners of thy field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy harvest:  thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger:  I am the Lord your God."  Leviticus 23:22

"And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation.  Ye shall do no servile work therein:  but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord."  Leviticus 23:23-25

"And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, also on the the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement:  it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.  And ye shall do no work in that same day:  for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the Lord your God.  For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.  And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in the same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people."  Leviticus 23:26-30

"And the Lord spake unto Moses saying, speak unto the children of Israel, saying, the fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the Lord.  On the first day shall be an holy convocation:  ye shall do no servile work therein.  Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord;  on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord:  it is a solemn assembly; and ye shall do no servile work therein."  Leviticus 23:33-36

"Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord seven days:  on the first day shall be a sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath.  And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days.  And ye shall keep it a feast unto the Lord seven days in the year.  It shall be a statute for ever in your generations:  ye shall celebrate it in the seventh month.  Ye shall dwell in booths seven days; all that are Israelites born shall dwell in booths:  that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt:  I am the Lord your God."  Leviticus 23: 39-43

Ethiopian Rescues Hebrew Prophet!

This is an amazing story, proving that God uses the unknown and the lowly to execute His purpose.  It is also a sad story of a weak King and a disobedient nation that gets what it earned.

Jeremiah was a man of God, a Hebrew prophet.  He loved the land of Judah.  He was faithful.  He had spoken the words that God gave him, and even had his scribe, Baruch, write them down.  Yet his desperate warnings went unheeded.  No one believed him.  He longed for his people to change their hearts and turn back to God, but of course they did not.

Jeremiah records the account of Jerusalem's siege by the Babylonians in Jeremiah 37.  Sadly he would be a witness of God's judgment against a rebellious people.  He would experience the King's wrath and God's deliverance.

Here's the story...

King Zedekiah had been appointed by Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon to rule over Jerusalem.  He had it made, with a good life overseeing Jerusalem and all its affairs.  Yet he jeopardized all that he had by trusting in his own wisdom, rather than obeying God.  For King Zedekiah violated his agreement with Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon by making an alliance with the Pharaoh of Egypt.

Nebuchadnezzar would not tolerate rebellion.  So he sent an army to take over Jerusalem.  Jerusalem was besieged for almost two years (2 Kings 25 and Jeremiah 52).

Hope arose in the hearts of the people when news came that the Pharaoh was on his way to offer assistance to the desperate Israelites.  King Zedekiah, concerned for his future and that of Jerusalem asked Jeremiah, the prophet of God to pray unto the Lord.

Here's what God said to Jeremiah:

"Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel; thus shall ye say to the King of Judah, that sent you unto me to inquire of me; "Behold, Pharaoh's army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.  And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire."  Thus saith the Lord; "Deceive not yourselves, saying, the Chaldeans shall surely depart from us; for they shall to depart.  For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire."  Jeremiah 37:7-10

Now that the Pharaoh had successfully routed the Babylonian army, Jeremiah left Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin.  On his way out of the city at the gate of Benjamin, Irijah, the captain of the ward, took him prisoner, thinking he was defecting to the Chaldeans.  Jeremiah was imprisoned in the dungeon in the house of Jonathan the scribe.

Many days later, Zedekiah sought Jeremiah's counsel again.  Jeremiah confirmed Zedekiah's fear.  God had spoken to Jeremiah again, telling him Zedekiah would be delivered unto the king of Babylon.  Zedekiah was not pleased.  He refused to release Jeremiah from prison.

Others were also angry at Jeremiah's words.  Shephatiah, Gedaliah, Jucal, and Pashur, princes of Judah, had heard the words Jeremiah spoke to the people.  They went to Zedekiah to beg the King to put Jeremiah to death.   Refusing, Zedekiah turned Jeremiah over to them to do with as they wished.

These spiteful, wicked men chose a slow death for Jeremiah.  He was taken to an old dungeon filled with mire and filth.  It was so deep that when Jeremiah was lowered into his cell, he sank into the muck.  Now he was trapped in a hole with no way of escape and without food or water.

Left to die, we must wonder about his thoughts.  Surely Jeremiah despaired for his life.  Cold, uncomfortable, and forsaken in a dark and dreary mire filled hole, had God forgotten his faithful service?  Did he believe God had left him alone and without help in his time of need?  Did he feel betrayed by the God whom he faithfully served?  Had he given up all hope?

Or did he believe that God would not desert him in his time of need?  Maybe God would send a rescuer...

In steps our hero...

Ebedmelech heard about what happened to Jeremiah.  He was concerned.  So he went to King Zedekiah to plead Jeremiah's case.  He reminded the King that Jeremiah would die where the men had left him.  He was rather emphatic in his explanation, calling the princes' act evil.  Here is a man who did not mince words!

King Zedekiah listened to Ebedmelech.  In Jeremiah 38 we learn that King Zedekiah gave permission for Jeremiah to be removed from his miry dungeon prison.  Quickly Ebedmelech took thirty men and went to the prison to release Jeremiah.  They found old rags and a rope to aid in Jeremiah's release.  The rags were lowered down to Jeremiah to place under his arms.  Then they lowered the rope.  With the crude rope under his arms, Jeremiah was hauled out of the mire.

King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah.  He wanted to know what God had in store for him.  Jeremiah exacted the King's promise that he would not be killed for his counsel before he would tell him what God said.

"Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, thus saith the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house:  but if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand."

King Zedekiah commanded Jeremiah not to tell anyone of God's words.  He was to say that he asked the King not to return him to his prison if the Princes asked about their conversation.  Then rather than release him, King Zedekiah kept him in the court of the prison until the day Jerusalem fell.

King Zedekiah and his family would have been spared, but this rebellious man would not heed the words of the prophet.  He chose to flee rather than submit to Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon.  God's words were carried out just as he said.

After the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem, the captain of the guard took Jeremiah and gave him over to Gedaliah, the newly appointed governor over Judah.  Jeremiah was saved.

So what happened to our hero, Ebedmelech?  God had a special word for Ebedmelech:

"Now the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying, go and speak to Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; "Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee.  But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord:  and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid.  For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee:  because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord."  Jeremiah 39:15-18

God would gift Ebedmelech with his own life, as the spoil or loot acquired after a great battle, as a reward for his deliverance of Jeremiah.

Ebedmelech is a hero.  He was not afraid to approach King Zedekiah who could have surely put him to death for his effrontery.  His boldness won the battle for Jeremiah.

The Lesson...

Despite the odds against us, we must obey our Lord.  We must exercise righteousness in all our doings.  For our God is faithful to do as He promises.

"O Love the Lord, all ye his saints:  for the Lord preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.  Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord."  Psalm 31:23-24

The Lesson of Fallen Leaves

When I look out over my yard, all I see are multicolored fallen leaves!  Despairing of having to mow and mulch yet again, I realized that even in fallen leaves, there is a lesson to be learned.

As the leaves swirled in the brilliant early morning sunshine, I marveled at God's creation and the beauty of the leaves in death.  Yes, it is death that is causing the leaves to change from a healthy green to brightly colored reds and yellows.  This is their last glorious moment.  As I mowed, I thought about life and how fleeting it is...

I thought about the times in life when everything is going well.  Flush with success, we have need of nothing.  Life is good and we prosper.  Nothing can stop us or so we think!

Puffed up with pride and success, we forget that all we have and all we are, come from the hand of God.

Lest we forget ourselves and steal all His glory, He allows a trial or two, hoping to draw us close again.  Instead we oftentimes move further into the terrors of sin and separation.

We must be stripped of our pride, self-sufficiency, and complacency.  It is only when we are stripped as bare as the trees in Autumn that we find that He never left us.

Then our souls are laid bare before Him.  Naked and vulnerable before Him, all pretense is gone.  Bereft and feeling alone, the coldness of our winter comes into our bones.

Finally we come to the end of ourselves.  We fall apart in fear and doubt.  We wonder why God left us.

Then, mindful of how truly needy we are, the spring of life fills us as God extends His hand in mercy and grace with lots of love and forgiveness in response to our repentant hearts.

Seeking Him and His way, we begin to grow again.  Soon new resources and new opportunities will be brought our way, for our Lord is faithful.

Our hearts swell with love and joy for He has saved us again from ourselves, and brought us through our trials.  Let us rejoice and give thanks!

We pray that maybe this time, we will not forget Him.

The dying leaves remind us that we too must die--die to self.  We must always seek the Root, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, for life and nourishment.

GRANDMOTHER'S SCRAPBOOK

Photo of Lois Rebecca Brice (1880-1918)

"Inspired by great-grandmother's scrapbook, compiled before 1918."

Come, Ye Thankful People, Come

Come, ye thankful people, come, raise the song of harvest home;
All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin.
God our Maker doth provide for our wants to be supplied;
Come to God’s own temple, come, raise the song of harvest home.

All the world is God’s own field, fruit unto His praise to yield;
Wheat and tares together sown unto joy or sorrow grown.
First the blade and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear;
Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be.

For the Lord our God shall come, and shall take His harvest home;
From His field shall in that day all offenses purge away,
Giving angels charge at last in the fire the tares to cast;
But the fruitful ears to store in His garner evermore.

Even so, Lord, quickly come, bring Thy final harvest home;
Gather Thou Thy people in, free from sorrow, free from sin,
There, forever purified, in Thy garner to abide;
Come, with all Thine angels come, raise the glorious harvest home.

  HOME SCHOOL TIPS

When you despair of settling down your children and getting them through their daily lessons, think about this poem written by Kate Cleary!  It is a perfect description of a boy!  Let us give thanks for our children, even when they are driving us nuts!

There’s a Boy in the House

-Kate M. Cleary (1863-1905)

A gun in the parlor, a kite in the hall,

In the kitchen a book, and a bat, and a ball.

The sideboard a ship, on the bookcase a flute,

And a hat for whose ownership none could dispute;

And out on the porch, gallantly prancing nowhere,

A spirited hobby-horse paws at the air;

And a well polished pie plate out there on the shelf,

Near the tall jell jar which a mischievous elf

Emptied as slyly and slick as a mouse,

Make it easy to see There’s a Boy in the House.

A racket, a rattle, a rollicking shout,

Above and below and around and about;

A whistling, a pounding, a hammering of nails,

The building of houses, the shaping of sails,

Entreaties for paper, for scissors, for string,

For every unfindable, bothersome thing;

A bang of the door, and a dash up the stairs.

In the interest of burdensome business affairs;

And an elephant hunt for a bit of a mouse,

Make it easy to hear There’s a Boy in the House.

But oh, if the toys were not scattered about,

And the house never echoed to racket and rout;

If forever the rooms were all tidy and neat.

And one need not wipe after wee muddy feet;

If no one laughed out if the morning was red,

And with kisses went tumbling all tired to bed;

What a wearisome work-a-day world don’t you see,

For all who love little wild laddies ‘twould be:

And I’m happy to think, though I shrink like a mouse,

From disorder,and din—There’s a Boy in the House!

HOMESCHOOL RESOURCES:

When we began our homeschooling journey, there were few resources to help us get started.  We too struggled to find information, resources, and support for our journey.  Homeschooling is more mainstream today, and for that I am truly thankful.

Still, there are times where reading about another's journey and gathering from the experience of others can inspire and be a help in time of need.  To ask questions about homeschooling please contact me!

THOUGHT PROVOKERS

Excerpt from "That Better Thing God Hath Prepared for Us (Hebrews 11:40)

by W. A. Criswell

"Now in the New Testament, the eighth chapter of the Book of Acts, the first verse begins, “And there arose a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem.” Now look at the fourth verse, “And they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word.” God having providing some better thing for us. How many of you could quote Romans 8:28? “All things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are called according to His purpose.” The providences of life in them God works together, God works together to bring some better thing for us. And when you live in a fierce hour and a troubled nation, and the prospects, the future that lies ahead looks as dark as the blackness of midnight. Just remember that God lives and God reigns and it is God’s purpose to give us that better thing."

  Cranberry Sauce

1 quart cranberries

2 cups sugar

pot of boiling water + 2 cups

Place cranberries into large kettle or soup pot.  Pour pot of boiling water over cranberries.  Let sit for approximately 3 minutes.  Drain.  Pour 2 cups boiling water over berries.  Bring to a boil.  Boil approximately 15 minutes.  Add sugar, but do not stir.  Cook for approximately 10 minutes.   Gently move the kettle back and forth over burner until sugar liquefies.  Berries will burst open.  Remove from heat and allow to cool in kettle.  Cranberry Sauce will thicken as it cools.

"And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God, and having favour with all the people.  And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved."  Acts 2:46-47

TIP OF THE MONTH

I had to bring inside potted plants that I never got around to planting.  Not wanting to damage furniture or floors when watering, I   looked for something to place under the pots to catch the drips from watering.  I wasn't finding anything suitable until I spotted some old Frisbees in my basement. Turned over, they had a nice little lip around the edge and were a perfect fit for my pots!
