"Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of.  For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ."  2 Corinthians 1:3-5

The Believer's Mission...

"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy."

1 Peter 2:1-10 (KJV)

WHO IS KING LEMUEL?

"The words of King Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him."  Proverbs 31:1

I've read Proverbs 31 many times, but only recently did I begin to wonder about King Lemuel.  Who is he?  I confess that I have never heard of him.  I am not alone, for no one seems to know the identity of this obscure king for sure.  However, there are some things we can surmise that are quite interesting.

The name "Lemuel" means "to God" or "belonging to God".  Bible scholars believe that Lemuel might possibly be a reference to King Solomon, who is believed to have written the Book of Proverbs.  It is possible that Lemuel is a pseudonym for Solomon, who may have wanted to hide his identity in this particular proverb.

There is more evidence we can use to speculate that Lemuel is King Solomon.  We know from Scriptures that Solomon found favor with God and was much beloved by God.  In 2 Samuel 12:24 we read, "And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her; and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon:  and the Lord loved him."  It is clear that the Lord had a special place in His heart for Solomon.  For Solomon was called Jedidiah which means "beloved of God".  God demonstrated His approval for Solomon by giving him this special name.  God's acceptance and love for Solomon was joyous news to David and Bathsheba; their sin of adultery was forgiven.  Since God restored them to full acceptance, we can learn that when God forgives, He forgives completely.  Even though he consequences for their sin was the death of their firstborn baby, the consequence in no way alters God's forgiveness and restoration.

Solomon was known for his great wisdom, a gift from God.  However, this wise man Lemuel had a wise mother.  The following verses in Proverbs 31 are a series of prophetic warnings that were uttered by Lemuel's mother, presumably Bathsheba if Solomon is indeed the author.  Here is a woman who spoke from the heartbreak of experience.  We can sum up her warnings in three main points:

1.  She warned against giving his strength to women, an act of chastity, with these words:  "Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings."  Proverbs 31:3

Solomon's legacy is that of a foolish man who squandered his blessings by intermarrying with heathen women.  This was forbidden by God.  He had called His people to separate and come apart from the idolaters.  Solomon was so enamored with these women that he forgot God's commands.

"But King Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; of the nations concerning which the Lord said unto the children of Israel, ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you:  for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods:  Solomon clave unto these in love.  And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines:  and his wives turned away his heart.  For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods:  and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father.  For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.  And Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and went not fully after the Lord, as did David his father.  Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.  And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.  And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the Lord God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice, concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods:  but he kept not that which the Lord commanded."  1 Kings 11:1-10

We understand that lust is a powerful drive and force in our lives.  When fulfilled, it will bring great ruin as it did to Solomon.  He retained his riches and his kingdom, but his loss of respect and dignity could not be reclaimed.  Not only did his sin affect him, but it affected God's people as well.

"But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship: then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people" 1 Kings 9:6-7

Separation is God's protection to keep us from sin.  When we partner with unbelievers we begin to grow apart from God.  Familiarity brings complacency with their sin.  Friendship will foster loyalty.  Soon a relationship is established that cannot be easily broken.  The lines of obedience that God sets are erased as compromise replaces obedience.  We have the example of Solomon to see the value of separation from the unbeliever.

2.  She called on him to be an advocate for those who could not speak for themselves; an act of mercy toward those who were weak.  "Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.  Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy." Proverbs 31:8-9

Today we think of the unborn who are aborted without their consent.  To cover the guilt and to refute the sin, we dispute the issues of personhood.  Who will speak for the unborn?

A study of the worship of Molech again exposes Solomon's grievous sexual sin.  Ashtoreth was a fertility goddess and was worshipped through temple prostitution.  Worshippers of Molech also engaged in child sacrifice by killing them and burning the bodies.  These grotesque acts were satanic in nature and were a means to gain favor and power from demons.  The Jewish Encyclopedia mentions that these idol worshippers also worshipped God.  It seems they had combined their worship experience with God along with the ungodly and unclean practices of idolatry and satanic worship.  "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.  For it is a shame even to speak of those thins which are done of them in secret."  Ephesians 5:11-12

Who were these idolators?  They were descendants of Lot's daughters through their initiated incestuous relationship with their father while he was drunk.

3.  Lemuel's mother called him to a life of temperance; an act of personal purity.  "It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:  lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted."  Proverbs 31: 4-5  A king must exercise good judgment and discernment, both which would be impaired if the king or ruler were drunk.  Frivolous words and thoughtless deeds are the result of an unbridled thirst or any addiction.

Drunkenness is a sure sign of a lack of wisdom.  When drunk one has little to no control over the lusts of the flesh.  Reason is cast aside to appease the desires of an addicted body.  Addictions are damaging to the body, to relationships, and to the soul.  Drunkenness is idolatry.

Solomon was the wisest man of all.  How could he have been pulled into sin so easily?  The answer lies in his disregard for God's instructions.  Fraternizing with the ungodly leads to friendship and acceptance of the ungodly.  That is why the Apostle Paul warns in 2 Corinthians 6:14 against being unequally yoked with unbelievers.  Obeying this command provides protection from the sin of idolatry.

The lessons Solomon teaches in Proverbs were gained unfortunately through experience.  By the time he realized the importance of obedience to God, the damage was done.  We cannot say that Solomon was ignorant or unwise, for God gave him abundant wisdom. Proverbs has many examples of godly wisdom.  He was without excuse.  Disregarding his own wisdom, he chose to sin.  His disobedience proves that even the wise can demonstrate foolishness when enslaved by the lusts of the flesh.

Help! I Lost My Christian Priorities

Getting caught up in all the world says is important is probably the biggest hindrance to keeping our Christian priorities at the top of our list. It's so easy to go about our business every day, look out for our own interests, and if someone else is having problems, well, "thank goodness it's not me".

Most of the time we can't see anything important enough to make us stop moving long enough to evaluate where we are, let alone where we're going. And of course, as long as we don't feel an immediate, pressing problem preventing us from moving forward, there's no reason to stop. At least, that's what the world says.

Most of the time it takes some kind of tragedy to stop us in our tracks. Then we look around and wonder why it happened...why me? And that's when the struggle really starts. Sound familiar?

I Can't Look...

There they all are; our priorities all laid out, Christian or not. When we're forced to look at where we are, sometimes we're faced with some really difficult truths. Often it isn't hard to see why we're in the situation we're in, and that is pretty tough to swallow. And yet, our next step is to do absolutely everything we can to reason our way out of our mess. There has to be someone to blame, there has to be something to do; there has to be some way out of this mess.

And so the mess continues until we've absolutely exhausted every remedy we can think of. And, after all else fails, we FINALLY throw up our hands and ask God for help.

God... You Want Me to Do What?

It isn't until we stop trying and start relying that God has a chance to work. Being the perfect gentleman, God won't interfere with what we're trying to do until we stop, step aside, and let God into the situation.

But of course, we expect God to straighten out our mess today. Right now would even be better. It may have taken us weeks, months, or even years to create the mess, but we expect God to clean it up in a day. And when it appears that He's not moving fast enough, we get frustrated. We start whining, complaining, grumbling; and of course, we might even try to take control again, and of course, it just prolongs the answers from coming.

When God does come on the scene, we'll know it. His Word says we will experience peace and the knowledge that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.

And let's face it, when we're in the middle of a bad situation, peace can be a very good thing.
We'll be able to rest assured, knowing God is working and no matter what, we're going to be OK.

Get REAL...

But, when God enters the picture, He does expect us to...

*Get honest. That means taking responsibility for the choices we've made that have caused us to be in our current situation. It means stopping the blame game. It's not easy to get real.

*Forgive everyone who's hurt us. OUCH. This is one of the hardest things to do, especially if we're still in the middle of it all, and things are still pretty awful.

*Be open to whatever He wants us to do. Sometimes that can mean doing nothing. Sometimes it can mean apologizing, walking away, or even just accepting things as they are until God has a chance to change things.

God never promised the ride wouldn't be bumpy, but He did promise that He'll sit right beside us the entire way. Things may not get better today or tomorrow, but slowly, little by little, God will make sense out of it all and set us back on the right path. The trick is to stay focused on the right priorities....the ones that lead to peace. Those would be our Christian priorities.

"I have chosen the way of truth:  thy judgments have I laid before me." Psalm 119:30

GOOD FOR WHAT?

An editorial in The Montgomery Advertiser referred to a man on the West Coast who built a marvelous machine in his garage.

Using surplus parts, he produced a machine that contained just about every mechanical and electrical device known to modern technology. On the builder's command, the huge machine, with its thousands of parts--gears, motors, relays, actuators, servo-mechanism, and so forth - would begin their complex operations.

From a control panel in the middle of the machine, the operator watched with satisfaction as lights blinked on and off to indicate all was going well, or, occasionally, that some section was in trouble.

Technicians rated the machine a marvel.  There was just one sad note.  The machine was designed and built to do nothing!  It was "magnum opus of a gadgeter who was carried away with the wonders of the machine age."  He got his kicks just sitting there, pulling switches and watching all those beautiful parts busy themselves functioning perfectly to accomplish nothing!

Certain sociologists saw in the machine a masterpiece of revolt against the times.  But the inventor disclaimed any such intention.  It was built as a mere plaything and for his own amusement.  That, in itself, might be rated as a worthy purpose by some.  But at best, such an elaborate layout is rather silly and expensive toy for a man so richly endowed.

Each one of us is a marvelous creation.  But we largely determine, ourselves, whether we will live purposefully, or destructively, or will merely vegetate.

Better to be cabbages than skunks or vultures.  But why not be real men and real women, with the Lord's help?  Such our Creator meant us to be, but he leaves in our hands the control panels of our lives, subject always to his over-all providence.

The challenge of Joshua is ours:  "Choose you this day whom you will serve."

BETTER THINGS

by George MacDonald

Better to smell a violet,
Than sip the careless wine;
Better to list one music tone,
Than watch the jewels' shine.

Better to have the love of one,
Than smiles like morning dew;
Better to have a living seed
Than flowers of every hue.

Better to feel a love within,
Than be lovely to the sight;
Better a homely tenderness
Than beauty's wild delight.

Better to love than be beloved.
Though lonely all the day;
Better the fountain in the heart,
Than the fountain by the way.

Better a feeble love to God,
Than for woman's love to pine;
Better to have the making God
Than the woman made divine.

Better be fed by mother's hand,
Than eat alone at will;
Better to trust in God, than say:
My goods my storehouse fill.

Better to be a little wise
Than learned overmuch;
Better than high are lowly thoughts,
For truthful thoughts are such.

Better than thrill a listening crowd,
Sit at a wise man's feet;
But better teach a child, than toil
To make thyself complete.

Better to walk the realm unseen,
Than watch the hour's event;
Better the smile of God alway,
Than the voice of men's consent.

Better to have a quiet grief
Than a tumultuous joy;
Better than manhood, age's face,
If the heart be of a boy.

Better the thanks of one dear heart,
Than a nation's voice of praise;
Better the twilight ere the dawn,
Than yesterday's mid-blaze.

Better a death when work is done,
Than earth's most favoured birth;
Better a child in God's great house
Than the king of all the earth.

  HOME SCHOOL TIPS

Developing Story Telling Skills

One of the biggest reqrets I have in our homeschool journey was not fostering story telling skills.  I believe if we had spent more time telling stories, writing skills would have been easier to develop.

One of the pluses of our journey is the amount of reading we did.  I made sure we had our own homeschool library with all the classics and many "just good to read" books.  When the boys were young, we read character building stories to them.  Later, we included required reading in our school day.  Reading good books is helpful in developing the mind and fostering concentration.

Even before reading is mastered, you can teach your children to tell stories verbally.  Story telling helps build imagination.  One of the earliest skills children learn is "playing pretend".  This game teaches the child to create vivid scenes and characters in their minds.

Drama is fun and a good way to make story telling more interesting.  There is a lot to be said for developing the skills of enunciation, expressiveness with movement, and vocal tones to convey meaning.  Practicing the character's voice while telling a story also helps the student to write speech patterns especially tuned to a character.  Some will enjoy making the special effects sounds that make a story interesting.

Mime, story telling without words, but through movement, is another way to help your children learn to express themselves.  Observe a mime in action or create your own story to mime for your children.  They learn by observing, then doing.

Read stories to your children, then ask them to tell you the story.  When they have the story learned, ask them to act out the story.  Help them with the sequence of events if needed.

It's always fun to perform the story for someone, but make sure it is a "safe" person who will encourage and enjoy the antics of story telling.  Be advised:  not everyone will have the confidence to perform publicly, so try to be patient and don't push.

Story telling also helps to develop logical thinking and concentration.  When it comes time to develop an essay, story telling skills will help make the essay more interesting to the reader.  It will be easier to teach character development because the student will already have learned how to create a visual picture of the character in the mind.

Many colleges require essay writing as an entrance requirement.  Since most public schools are rather lax on creative writing, homeschoolers who can write a decent story, essay, or autobiography will be way ahead of others striving for that coveted acceptance letter.  Teaching story telling will help them master creative writing.

HOMESCHOOL RESOURCES:

When we began our homeschooling journey, there were few resources to help us get started.  We too struggled to find information, resources, and support for our journey.  Homeschooling is more mainstream today, and for that I am truly thankful.

Still, there are times where reading about another's journey and gathering from the experience of others can inspire and be a help in time of need.  To ask questions about homeschooling please contact me!

THOUGHT PROVOKERS

Excerpt from "Advice Concerning the Inner and Outer Life" by Francois Fénelon

"Let your conduct be consistent, moderate without affectation of either good or ill, but firm in what is right, and so decided that no one can hope to drag you back.  You will get off better, and be less tormented by others when they are convinced that you are thoroughly devoted to religion, and that you will not yield.  Those who are suspected of weakness, inconsistency, or insincerity, are sure to be beset with importunity.

Put your trust, not in your own strength, nor in your resolutions, nor in the best possible precautions (though these should be taken with all care and vigilance), nor even in any promises you may make, but solely in God's goodness, who loved you from eternity, before you loved Him, and even when you were ungrateful to Him."
