"Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?"  Galatians 4:16

  Letter from the Editor...

Hello!

This month is a new beginning...  a time of thanksgiving, a time to reassess and get back on track, and the start of something big.  Every day is an opportunity for God to work in our lives.   God worked in the life of Abraham and Sarah to create a new nation, Israel.  God works in our lives enabling us to be keepers at home.  We give Him praise and glory for all that He does daily in and through our lives!  Let us dedicate ourselves to our Lord and to the calling He has given to us.

Others need to hear the Gospel message.  Let us be diligent to talk about our faith and our Lord Jesus Christ who is the Savior of the world, to those will believe Him.   Ray Comfort's film called "180" What Changed Their Minds in Seconds.... is a great witnessing tool.  It is an important film comparing the Holocaust and abortion.  It contains graphic pictures of the Holocaust, but is a must see.  You can find it after "Thought Provokers".

"The night is far spent, the day is at hand:  let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light."  Romans 13:12

The Believer's Mission...

"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy."

1 Peter 2:1-10 (KJV)

The Start of Something Big

"Thou art the Lord the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham; and foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous"  Nehemiah 9:7-8 (KJV)

Have you ever wondered how significant things come about in the course of daily life?  I have.  Small innocuous incidents often lead to events that impact the entire world.  One such incident happened in Haran; a city located somewhere in what is today Turkey.  But the story starts before Haran.  God had spoken to a man named Abram in a place called Ur.  That conversation was the start of something big; really big!

What did the Lord God Jehovah have to say?  Why Abram?  The Bible gives the account of Abram's (Abraham) conversation with the Lord God Jehovah in Genesis 12.

"Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee"  Genesis 12:1

The Lord God Jehovah had spoken to Abraham and given him specific instructions.  The account in Genesis 12 is told in hindsight; "the Lord had said" so the question arises when did the Lord speak.  Genesis 11 tells us that Terah, Abraham's father, lived in Ur.  Terah was descended from Noah's son, Shem.  It is assumed that Terah was aware of God's instruction to Abraham because he took Abraham, Abraham's wife Sarai (Sarah), and his grandson Lot out of Ur, settling in Haran.  When Terah died there, Abraham recalled the words of the Lord and the great promise the Lord God Jehovah had made to him:

"And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:  and I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee:  and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed."  Genesis 12:2-3

This was the beginning of the great nation, Israel.  Many thoughts cross my mind as I ponder the impact of this simple instruction to go out.  What if Abraham had not obeyed God?  What if he had decided to stay in Haran to be near his father's burial place?  What if he had grown so content in this foreign place that he no longer had a zeal to follow the Lord?  What influences might they have encountered that would have tempted them away from worship of the true god, the Lord God Jehovah?

We don't know how long the family was in Haran before Terah died, so we don't know how attached they might have become to this place at the crossroads of commerce and culture.  An interesting bit of information is that the early Mesopotamians in this area worshipped the Moon God they called "Sin," symbolized by a crescent moon.  In fact, worship of the Moon-god was the dominant religion throughout Mesopotamia and Syria,  carrying down through the centuries to the Assyrians and Babylonians and Arabians.  It continued even into the early Christian time.  Archaeological excavations have revealed the extent of Moon-god worship among the peoples of the Middle East.

God clearly had called them away, not only from their country, their people, and all that was familiar.  The Lord God Jehovah had delivered them out of an idolatrous city and nation, for Ur was the capital of Sumeria.  He delivered them away from the influence of Moon-god worship.

Abraham, Sarah, and Lot followed the Lord God Jehovah.  There are many lessons we can learn from Abraham's story.

Leaving to start a new life in a new place is fraught with uncertainty.  What did Sarah think about God's call?  How did she react?  Did she cry as she sorted through her belongings, deciding what to take and what to leave behind?  Did she argue with Abraham like many of us might have done?  And what of Abraham?  Did he have a lump of fear in the pit of his stomach at the thought of venturing out into the unknown?  Or might he have been thrilled, wondering about the place the Lord God Jehovah would lead him to?

How would we react if God called us to something beyond our imagination or understanding?  Do we listen when God speaks to our hearts?  When you feel His prompting through the Holy Spirit, do you stand still and listen?  Do you make sure that what you hear is consistent with God's Word?

Many Christians today claim to hear a word of knowledge from God.  Some speak of a new revelation or a new prophetic message.  They speak with authority and with conviction, but they are proven wrong, demonstrating their message is not of God.  People today continue to follow after false teaching and false prophets, even Christians.  Test the spirits to see if they be from our Lord it says in 1 John 4:1.  Learn what the Bible says, and believe it.  It does not change with the times.  The Lord God Jehovah does not change.

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God:  because many false prophets are gone out into the world."  1 John 4:1

"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever.  Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines.  For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace..." Hebrews 13:8-9a

Abraham followed the instruction of the Lord God Jehovah because he was certain He was the only one true God.  He didn't follow half-heartedly, hoping for a better deal elsewhere.  He followed with the intent of obedience to God's every command.

Life gets in our way from hearing God.  We suppose we have understanding of God's intent, and carry out what we think is His will, but unless we have sought Him in prayer, we may miss God's plan.  We may have unconsciously substituted our own, thinking it is His.  Abraham made this mistake.

Abraham kept on traveling into the land of Canaan to Sichem in the plain of Moreh.  There, God appeared to Abraham:

"And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land:  and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him."  Genesis 12:7

Finally this was the place.  God had appeared and spoken.  Half his promise was fulfilled.  Abraham and Sarah and Lot had arrived.  After he built the altar, Abraham moved on a bit to a mountain near Bethel and built another altar and the Bible says he called upon the name of the Lord.

At this point the story takes a new turn in the later part of Genesis 12.  Conditions in the area were becoming dire because of a great famine.  So Abraham decided to go to Egypt.  The Bible does not tell us that he consulted with God.  In fact, the outcome leads one to believe that he didn't.  Despite being shown the promised land and the ownership transferred to Abraham, he kept on going all the way to Egypt.  God didn't even stop him.  Abraham had spent time with the Lord praising and glorifying Him, yet He missed God's plan.  How is that possible?

Missing God's plan is very easy to do if we forget to consult Him.  We can begin to feel very comfortable and when that happens, we begin to assume we know and understand God.  We bring Him down to our level and make him a pal.  We're in this together, God.  Our own understanding clouds our vision and blocks our hearing.  Oftentimes our hearts are so full of our own plans, we can't see God's plan.  Since God didn't stop him, Abraham assumed he was following God's plan.  Do not make this mistake we are so prone to do.  There is danger in assuming we know God's will and can carry it out without seeking Him.

Egypt became a place for sin in Abraham's life.  He passed his wife Sarah off as his sister to the Pharaoh, and truly she was a half-sister, but he told a half-truth by withholding the fact that she was also his wife.  The Lord caused plagues to come upon Pharaoh and his household, until Pharaoh realized the truth. Then he sent Abraham and Sarah away.

When you lose sight of God, it's best to go back to where you left Him.  That's what Abraham did.  He went back to the first altar he built and there he called out to the Lord.  Now God was ready to make known His plan to Abraham.  First, Lot and Abraham parted ways, for Lot was not going to be a partner to God's covenant with Abraham.  Each had become prosperous and were straining for space in which to grow. Abraham settled in the area known as Hebron, and built an altar.  Lot settled in the cities of the plain, namely Sodom.

The cities were extremely wicked and before long trouble arose.  Enemies attacked the cities and Lot and his family were taken captive. Upon hearing the news, Abraham rose up with his servants and fought the enemy, succeeding in rescuing Lot and all that had been taken from Sodom.  Melchizedek, King of Salem and most importantly, "the priest of the most high God" (Genesis 14:18), came and blessed Abraham and received tithes from him.  The King of Sodom also wanted to reward Abraham, but Abraham rejected all that the King offered, except for the portion due his servants.

Yet God wasn't finished with Abraham just yet.  God didn't just lead Abraham to the promised land, and dump him.  The Lord continued to be with Abraham.  Before long, Abraham had a vision and God spoke to him:  "Fear not, Abram:  I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward." (Genesis 15:1b)

Abraham replies:  "Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed:  and lo, one born in my house is mine heir." (Genesis 15:2)

God replies:  "...This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine."  (Genesis 15:4b)

"And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them:  and he said unto him, So shall they seed be.  And he believed in the Lord; and He counted it to him for righteousness."  Genesis 15:5-6

Abraham questioned God.  He wanted assurance.  That's what we need too.  We want to make sure we have heard rightly.  Abraham got the assurance he needed.  God had him prepare a sacrifice.  But God didn't consume the sacrifice right away.  Abraham went into a deep sleep the Bible says, and God spoke to him, revealing the future of his descendants.  Abraham learned they would be oppressed in a strange land, and would be delivered.  God graciously revealed how His promise would be fulfilled.  Not only would God build a great nation through Abraham, but He would also preserve them.

Then as the sun was going down, the sacrifice was consumed.  God made a covenant with Abraham:

"In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:  the Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, and the Hittites, and Perizzites, and the Rephaims, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and Girgashites, and the Jesusites." Genesis 15:18b-21

This was the beginning of something really big, the creation of a new nation, consecrated to the Lord God Jehovah.

"I will sing unto the Lord, because He hath dealt bountifully with me." Psalm 13:6

   Musings... Hebrews

"So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation."  Hebrews 9:28

"Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for He is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:  not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another:  and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching"  Hebrews 10:23-24

"Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward.  For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.  For yet a little while, and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry."  Hebrews 10:35-37

"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.  For consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.  Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin."  Hebrews 12:1-4

"Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen."  Hebrews 13:20-21

FAVORITE THINGS....

Being a Keeper at Home

During our recent surprise October snowstorm I got to thinking about life in the pioneer days.  Being a keeper at home was so much more difficult.  Isn't it amazing how our Lord equips us for our time?  We would have been lost in Bible days and even in pioneer days, trying to cope with the needs of a family in those environments.

Families picked up lock, stock, and barrel to move to an unknown land, uncertain of what awaited them.  With the spring floods and October snowstorm, I've been thinking a lot about survival skills.  We've had to practice a few ourselves when the power went off!  We weren't in peril, just mightily inconvenienced.

A good generator provided enough electricity to keep the refrigerator cool and the well pumping water.  A nice old fashioned coal stove keeps the house warm very inexpensively.  Cooking on a gas stove enabled me to provide hot meals for the family.  Hurricane lanterns provided light. We are blessed with these modern survival tools to help us get through the days long power outages.

The pioneers, my ancestors, didn't have it this easy.  They had to grow their own food and "put it up" into glass jars or crocks. Other vegetables went to the root cellar.  Water had to be hauled into the house and heated on the stove.  Baths and hair washings weren't a daily practice!  Imagine the chore of doing laundry.  This was real survival!  Makes me ashamed to complain about my little inconveniences.

Women have always been the keeper of the home, while the men worked in the fields or at their craft or business.  Titus 2:3-5 describes our role as wives:

"The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good thing; that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."

I chose being a full time keeper at home years ago after a revival meeting by Life Action Ministries.  God opened our eyes to the truth of our situation.  I realized that my husband was getting my leftovers.  My leftover energy after spending a day at my job, my leftover time, and my leftover everything because by the time I got home, I was too exhausted to do anything else.  I worked outside my home for several years, until God provided a way for me to be at home full time.

While I realize that not every woman has the luxury of being at home full time, every woman can be a keeper at home to some degree.  It is us women who make a house a home.  God has gifted us with the ability to create a warm and loving environment for our husband and children.  We have the call to create a godly environment and to foster a love for our Lord demonstrated by our chaste and meek spirits.  Okay, still working on a meek spirit.  However, our homes should reflect our love for our Lord and be a place of hospitality to others.

"Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word by won by the conversation of the wives; while they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.  Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament f a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.  For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands"  1 Peter 3:1-5

I confess to hating the Proverbs 31 woman in my early years.  I believed it to be an impossible attainment.  It still seems rather daunting, and of course none of us are perfect, but we are able to make an attempt.  While I am at home, I still have opportunities outside the home to minister to others and participate in a home business, while continuing my attempt to be a Proverbs 31 woman.

It's the little things that make a difference...

*Morning prayer time and Bible reading helps me to focus on my Lord and get my day off to a good start.  When I worked on the job, I prayed and read my Bible at lunch, sitting in my car with my sandwich.

*Go to bed on time so you can get at least 7 hours sleep.  A few extra minutes of rest after the alarm goes off can be the start of a day playing catch up.  Get up a few extra minutes early to get a head start.

*Working women do not have time for hot meals or do they?  A hot meal for dinner, seated at a table is far better than fast food and tv trays.  Meals don't have to be fancy and can be cooked in a crock pot, ready when you get home.  Simple salads with a good crusty bread make an excellent meal that is easy and quick to prepare.  Even a warmed up can of soup in a china bowl can be a blessing to your loved ones.

*What's the secret to accomplishing all you need to do?  Stay hydrated by drinking water.  Take a short break each hour and move around if you work at a desk.  Don't eat sweets; switch to protein snacks.

We at home women need to be as diligent about caring for our homes as we would for caring for our jobs.  It is a temptation to spend our time unwisely watching videos, playing games, texting, talking on the phone, visiting friends, shopping, etc.  There are a lot of distractions!  If we are busy about all these things, we will not have time to care for our family and home.  Our loved ones will become interrupters of our activities and our home care will go by the wayside.  Our family and our home is to be our priority.  Wise planning will allow for enough time to pursue appropriate recreational activities.

Our Lord honors our sincere efforts.  He has called us to be keepers at home.  As with all callings from God, He equips us with the skills and abilities to carry out the tasks of our calling.  Honoring our Lord by our obedience and faithfulness to our husband and children and home brings great reward.  First, we have the assurance of being in His will.  Second, we have the knowledge that our role is vital to our family and our community.  It is in the home where character and godliness are learned.

God has blessed us with perhaps the most important task of all--that of caring for all those He gives to us.

DEDICATION

By Sarah E. Keeler

Just as I am without one plea,

But that Thou hast some task for me,

And that my life belongs to Thee,

Oh, calling Voice, I come, I come.

Just as I am, obedience mine,

The choice of where and when be Thine;

To seek the "fitting," all Divine

Spirit of help, I come, I come.

Just as I am, not mine to wait

Nor count my service small nor great,

Nor seek its ending, soon or late,

Oh, King of Love, I come, I come.

Just as I am, here at Thy feet,

My sins confessed, my heart made sweet,

Sufficient grace for me complete,

Oh, Victor-Christ, I come, I come.

Just as I am, I know Thee near,

To bury my to-morrows here,

In Love that knows nor doubt nor fear,

Until Thy Kingdom come.

  HOME SCHOOL TIPS

Stamp Collecting as a Teaching Tool

Years ago I became interested in stamp collecting.  Since stamps are available on a huge variety of subjects, it seemed a good way to collect memorabilia of a particular era or on a topic such as dogs or cats.  The bi-centennial of the United States generated lots of historical stamps.  Another popular topic is the royal families of Europe from Great Britain to Monaco.  As I collected stamps I realized the benefits of using stamps as a teaching tool.  Learning about history and geography is so much more fun if you collect stamps!

Stamps bring people together.  A man from Africa visited our church once to attend an evangelism seminar.  Coming from a very poor country, he was exuberant in his appreciation of the hospitality and friendships he was making.  Consequently he gifted our church with a paper bag filled with cancelled stamps from all over Africa.  It was his gift to demonstrate his joy and thanksgiving at being able to attend the seminar.  Someone mentioned that I collected stamps, so the small collection was passed to me.  I couldn't wait to look them over!  There were stamps from South Africa, Niger, Kenya, Liberia, and more!

Stamp collecting is a bit like a treasure hunt; you never know what you will find or where your interest will take you!  Getting started isn't difficult.  A field trip to your local philately store will provide opportunities to talk to an expert, gather basic supplies, and spark an area of interest.  Most communities offer local philatelic organizations that meet to discuss stamp collecting and trade stamps.  There is a subtle difference between stamp collecting and philately.  Stamp collecting is just that, collecting stamps and mounting them in albums to preserve them.  Philately is about studying stamps and postal history, part of which is collecting.  You can get in as deep as you wish!

Interactive learning is the best way to teach your kids.  It forces them to hear instruction, observe, and perform.  Stamp collecting engages all the learning styles, lightening the burden of trying to interest the kids in doing school work.  For the resistant child, this may be the solution that will spark interest and enthusiasm.

Here's a list of online sites that will perk your interest and give you an idea of what's going on in the stamp world.  You'll find lots of helpful resources:

HOMESCHOOL RESOURCES:

When we began our homeschooling journey, there were few resources to help us get started.  We too struggled to find information, resources, and support for our journey.  Homeschooling is more mainstream today, and for that I am truly thankful.

Still, there are times when reading about another's journey and gathering from the experience of others can inspire and be a help in time of need.  To ask questions about homeschooling please contact me!

THOUGHT PROVOKERS

Words of Wisdom from Rev. John Hall excerpted from his article "Endeavor-What?" ...

"What would you think of anyone who took lodgings with a family and brought in a patient with smallpox?  Keep all contagion, all infection, all seeds of evil, out of your home.   You know the hymn that so many will sing on Thanksgiving Day.  Here is a poor parody of it, which perhaps you will remember:

My Home, it is of thee,

Where all are good to me,

Of thee I sing;

Home of my father's cares,

Home of my mother's prayers,

O God through all the years,

Thy blessing bring."

Take care of your influence.  Let it be for good only.  Even an innocent thing to you may look bad to a younger or less instructed one than you."

"And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God, and having favour with all the people.  And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved."  Acts 2:46-47

TIP OF THE MONTH -

Simple living begins with discarding the superfluous.  Start now to reduce clutter one room at a time.

Everyone has a system.  My system is to get so fed up that I start going through the piles.  Be advised, it takes time and energy and diligence!  Here are some easy tasks to get you started...

*throw away old phone books, newspapers, catalogs, and magazines (Take them immediately to the garbage can.)

*give away clothes in good condition that you no longer wear  (Set the bag in the car so you will remember to drop them off.)

*throw away old medicines (Some communities have a collection program so they don't end up in the water or accessible by others.)

*throw away old cleaning supplies
