"Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?"  Galatians 4:16

  Letter from the Editor...

Hello!

September has been very interesting so far with such extreme weather issues!  It has certainly been a month of stresses for much of our nation.  I've included a list of essential items you should have on hand for next time. Learn how to cope with the trials and tribulations that come our way.  I like to think of them as mountains to climb.  If you're feeling God's hand upon you, take some time to deal with areas of sin that have crept into your life.  Don't let sin become the norm, but get rid of it. Wildcrafting was always a fun time when I was growing up.  Grandmama and Mama loved to gather God's free bounty for our family.  Learn how to take advantage of God's provision.

Let's take time to remember those who died on 9/11 and the courage of our first responders.

The Believer's Mission...

"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy."

1 Peter 2:1-10 (KJV)

God's Hand

"For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me..."  Psalm 32:4a (KJV)

David is the author of these words in Psalm 32:4.  He knew what it felt like to be under God's hand of conviction.  David had sinned, yes even the greatly revered King sinned against God.  He felt the powerful conviction that a just and loving God brings upon us when we sin.  It is a hand that touches us in righteous judgment.  His hand demands a response.  We can bow ourselves in submission or we can fling God's hand off in defiance.

A Believer is never comfortable with sin, and can never feel the joy and peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7) when sin is a norm.  God will not let us become complacent and content in our sin.  He must always bring us back to the fold (Matthew 18:12), for He promises never to leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).  We oftentimes choose to walk away from Him because we do not want to submit to His authority over our lives.

The Israelites felt God's hand upon them as they fled Egypt for the land long ago given to Abraham.  They too felt His hand of justice, for most of the adults died in the wilderness as a result of their disobedience and unwillingness to believe God.  They violated their covenant with God.  The penalty for sin is death, but God in His mercy allowed the majority of them to live out their lives wandering in the desert.  They were not allowed to enter into the promised land.  God is just and must fulfill His law and His commands, yet we fault Him for being a just God.

People call it conscience.  I call it God's hand.  That little nagging inside our heart grows into a raging battle that can only be won by submission and obedience to God's commands.  His hand is heavy as He brings to our heart and mind the reality of our sinfulness; the joy we find in self will and disobedience.  We love sin and readily give into the desires of our flesh.  How foolish we are to think He won't see and hear and know our hearts.

David knew the only way to find relief from the heaviness of God's hand was to throw himself upon the mercy of the Lord God Jehovah.  There is none other who can help us.

"Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.

For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me:  my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

I acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid.  I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord:  and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.  Selah.

For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found:  surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.

Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah

Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding:  whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.

Many sorrows shall be to the wicked:  but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about.

Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous:  and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart."  - Psalm 32

We have lost our way, thinking that sin is acceptable to God because He has done nothing, yet.  We have arrogantly defied the Word of God, misinterpreting its message and refusing to understand its truths, cloaking our sin in willful ignorance.  We coexist with sin in politeness and tolerance.  We fear offending man, rather than our Lord.

Our complacency with the sin in our midst must be particularly distasteful to our righteous Lord, for He called us to be a people set apart (1 Peter 2).  Each of us must take responsibility for the role we have played in fostering complacency and disobedience.  We have tolerated sin.  God does not.  People have been deceived, believing that God is only love and will not punish sin.

Man has substituted his own brand of Christianity for the truths of the Word.  We tolerate and accept what God hates.  The world's ways have entered into our churches.  We use worldly enticements, hoping to compel the lost to come in, rather than allowing the Word to be sufficient to accomplish its purpose.

Many fail to understand Matthew 7:13-14, "Enter ye in at the strait gate:  for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:  because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."  The masses will not follow the narrow way of Jesus.

The message of the cross is clear.  The Bible says, "...whosoever will call on the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Acts 2:21b).  Jesus says, "follow me" (Matthew 4:19).  The still small voice urges us to come to Him.  People everywhere seek a hero to follow, but they prove inadequate and impotent to fill that role perfectly and completely in our lives.  Only God is worthy.

What does it mean to follow Jesus?

We are to cast ourselves upon Him for salvation and redemption, knowing the reality of our sin and the futility of our efforts to save ourselves.  We are to seek only Him, knowing that He is God.  Following recognizes our hopeless state and realizes He is "the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6a).

We talk of raising a standard (also called a banner or rallying point), but we don't have to search for one.  We have Jesus!  He is our rallying point!  When His nature is understood, there is only one thing left to do, bow down.  When we recognize Him as Creator God, we will see ourselves for what we are and we will know we are sinners.

It doesn't matter how sincere we are or how much we want a place in Heaven.  If you want salvation and forgiveness of sin, you must be born again spiritually.  This is a work of the Holy Spirit, for He brings the conviction that leads to understanding and conversion.  If you truly want Jesus, you will follow Him.  To do less is to deny Him.

If God's hand is heavy upon you, then you must meet Him in prayer and submit yourself to Him.  If you realize that sin is a pattern in your life, you must become born again.  I suggest you begin a study of His Word starting with the book of John.  Let His Word change your heart.

"Let all the earth fear the Lord:  let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him."  Psalm 33:8

NEED AIR??

Several years ago, I read Jon Krakauer's book, Into Thin Air, a documentary of his experience on Mount Everest during a freak storm that cost eight other climbers their lives.  Freak storms happen.  They come into our lives in many forms-a friend's betrayal, the death of a loved one, an unexpected divorce, financial devastation, catastrophic illness, natural disasters etc.  Oftentimes, they leave us gasping for air and wondering 'how will we ever get through this'.  The answer is that alone, it is difficult at best, but to the Believer, Jesus is always our hope.

If you keep on looking up, focused on God, you will receive the direction you need for these critical moments.  Take what you already know from His Word and apply it to your life.  His Word is true and applicable in life's freak storms.  When you are gasping for breath in your sorrow and pain, let the power of God through the Holy Spirit sustain you.  How do you know that God is the answer?  His Word reveals the testimonies of others who have experienced God's power working in their lives.

The Apostle Paul knew that God is able to provide what is needed to make it through the toughest of times.  He understood that good people suffer.  We walk through the valley of the shadow of death and are not delivered.  We experience terrible things, but God is with us helping us to endure what we must.  These are Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10:

"And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee:  for my strength is made perfect in weakness.  Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake:  for when I am weak, then am I strong."   (KJV)

We think we should live a life free from the trials and tribulations simply because we are Believers.  It is a huge delusion that obedience to God brings instant relief from suffering.  Obedience does not always guarantee a reward on this earth.  The Bible warns us that we will suffer.  We will think God's hand is upon us for some sin we have done, but no, when we suffer, God's hand is extended to offer mercy and grace to endure.  Consider what Paul said:

"Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:  but rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy."  1 Peter 4:12-13

Mountains are impressive and dangerous.  The higher you climb, the less oxygen is available.  Too little air and your mind begins to play games on you.  You can't think clearly.  Your judgment becomes impaired.  Likewise, dwelling only on your problems will keep you trapped in a constant state of confusion, dismay, and doubt.  If you think about it, it is so easy and natural to be very focused on the problem that's just under our nose, a very nearsighted approach when applied to life.  Sometimes it feels like life will never be normal again.  Sometimes we can't even remember when life was normal.  That's when we need a new perspective.  We need our Lord to lift up our heads to give us some hope that the end is in sight.

To make it through, you have to keep looking upward and forward.  Don't look back, for one misstep could result in tragedy.  In mountain climbing, the next handhold or toehold isn't below you, but above.  Climbers should never climb alone.  Likewise we are not alone, for we have Jesus through the Holy Spirit.  Consider the wisdom of these verses:

"Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.  For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow:  but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up."  Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Remember, we can do nothing apart from our Lord.  Jesus said:

"I am the vine, ye are the branches:  He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit:  for without me ye can do nothing."  John 15:5

Look to the Lord for your sustenance.  God is still in control and He has perfect vision.  He knows where you are and what is happening in your life.  Allow Him to work out His will and purpose in your life.

Standing on the mountain top, victorious over life's trials is a glorious moment!  There is immense satisfaction, for you have conquered.  But did you do the conquering?  Rejoice that the trial is overcome, but remember that God brought you to that mountain top.  Give Him the glory and the praise for He is faithful to walk with us along our journey of life if we have accepted Him as our Lord and Savior.

Yet, the mountain top experience is but a short respite from the struggle of life in the valley.  While you're on the mountain top with few distractions, take time to think and to pray, thanking Him for His provision and help in time of need.

When life starts to strangle you and you can't breathe, seek the Lord with all of your heart, mind, and soul.  Attaining life's mountain top experience requires faith in God, reliance on His guidance, and obedience to His commands.  He will guide you to your journey's end and enable you to endure and overcome.

   Musings...

"And Jehu the son of Hanani the Seer went out to meet him, and said to King Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the Lord?  Therefore is wrath upon thee from before the Lord."

Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine heart to seek God.

And Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem:  and he went out again through the people from Beersheba to mount Ephraim, and brought them back unto the Lord God of their fathers.

And he set judges in the land throughout all the fenced cities of Judah, city by city,

And said to the judges, take heed what ye do:  for ye judge not for man, but for the Lord, who is with you in the judgment.

Wherefore now let the fear of the Lord be upon you; take heed and do it:  for there is no iniquity with the Lord out God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.

Moreover in Jerusalem did Jehoshaphat set of the Levites, and of the priests, and of the chief of the fathers of Israel, for the judgment of the Lord, and for controversies, when they returned to Jerusalem.  And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the Lord, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.

And what cause soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even warn them that they trespass not against the Lord, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren:  this do, and ye shall not trespass."  2 Chronicles 19:2-10

The Rural Home

by S. Moore

I love to roam o'er the mountains wild,

All topped with healthy brown-

For I'd rather be called the desert child,

Thank dwell in the crowded town.

I turn my eyes from the gilded toys

Of the fanciful bazaar,

To muse upon the purer joys,

Of the verdant hills afar.

O!  Tell me not of the city gay,

Or of towns where merchants be,

Where luxury riots from day to day,

In the haunts of revelry.

Tho' they be the homes of fashion and wealth,

They're also the haunts of sin,

And not conducive to vigorous health,

And happiness felt within.

My home is on the green hill side,

Where sweetest flowrets grow,

Where crystal streamlets gently glide

Down to the vale below.

And in the sweet vale by the river's banks,

You may oft see the angler stray,

Or at eve the youth in a thousand pranks

Beguiling the time away.

Then send me back to my country home

Till I breathe the balmy sweets,

I never inhale in the lamp-lit dome

Nor in the crowded streets.

FAVORITE THINGS....

WILDCRAFTING FUN!

Pokeweed (I think)

I learned about wildcrafting from my mama and grandma.  Both delighted in finding roadside berry bushes or forgotten fruit trees.  To the unfamiliar, “wildcrafting” is the term used for harvesting food in the wilds.  Wildcrafting enthusiasts love foraging for medicinal herbs and edible plants.  Half the fun is the hike and discovery of a new uncultivated food source.

One of the favorite things we did as a family was going to Red Rocks to pick wild plums in the summer.  Mama made a delicious jelly that lasted us through the cold winter from the small sweet plums.  Every holiday featured one of the small prized jars of her special plum jelly.

Grandma who lived in the Southwest enjoyed the fruit of the Prickly Pear Cactus.  The fruit is yellow or red and shaped like a pear.  It tastes sweet, but must be peeled to remove the spikes.  Another favorite we could eat right off the cactus was the yellow fruit of the barrel cactus.  Out on our desert treks rock hunting, a taste of the barrel cactus fruit was thirst quenching.  At least it kept us occupied until we could get back to the car for water.

Wildcrafting is lots of fun, but you must be knowledgeable about what you’re picking or run the risk of gathering misidentified plants that can lead to poisoning.  The best source I know is the “Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants’ by Bradford Angier.  It has pictures and descriptions to aid in correct plant identification.  You will also enjoy helpful tips on how to prepare plants for eating.

I learned to be cautious after reading the account of a family who cooked and ate what they thought were wild mushrooms.  Instead they had gathered a poisonous variety that caused death for some with the more fortunate requiring a liver transplant.  The moral here is to know for sure what you are picking.  If you aren’t sure, leave it alone.

When our boys were young, we cautioned them about picking and eating things they found in the woods.  I had noticed what appeared to be wild strawberries growing nearby, but uncertain, I cautioned the boys against eating them.  One day soon after, the boys came in with red mouths.  I asked them if they ate the “wild strawberries” and of course they denied it.  Then I had them look in the mirror and the truth came out.  Thankfully they were strawberries and not a poisonous red berry.  I think they learned their lesson.

In a survival situation, it is helpful to know what edible plants are native to your locale.  Learn to identify and prepare the wild food that God has provided.  I was amazed to discover the tall green plant with the purple berries that grew like a weed in my yard was actually called poke weed.  It was a surprise to learn that poke weed leaves and shoots are good to eat, but only after cooking.  Be careful to avoid eating wild edibles if you have sprayed chemicals or pesticides.  Not all plant parts are edible, so be sure to learn what parts are edible and how to properly prepare wild edibles.  Learn when is the best time to harvest.

Look around your yard to see what edibles are available.  I found wild grapes, poke weed, wild onions, wild blackberries, wild strawberries, juniper, clover, chicory, and don’t forget dandelion.  One last reminder, be careful not to take more than one third of the available source.  Leave some to continue to grow and some to share with others.  I think you will be surprised at the bounty God has provided in the wild.

"Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:  and they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it."  Amos 8:11-12

  HOME SCHOOL TIPS

The Clock is Ticking

When I first started home teaching my children, I found myself stressed to the max very quickly.  There was so much I wanted to show them and to tell them, but the clock was ticking.  There was scarcely enough time to cover all the assignments for each subject.

The louder the clocks ticked, the more stressed I became.  There was no room for flexibility in my schedule.  If I fell behind in moving to the next subject, the entire day was a race to the finish.  I soon realized a structured day is a necessity to ensure that subjects are learned and work is accomplished.

There is so much more to learn today than there was fifty years ago.  So it is for each successive generation.  How difficult it is to choose which things are essential to their growth and development.  That is why a good curriculum is so important.  It helps us focus our attention.

Organized learning is also purposeful teaching.  The goal is not in just the completion of curriculum, but to sow seeds of knowledge that lead to understanding and wisdom.  In all our studies with our children, we must teach them about our Lord and train them in God's ways. Every assignment is an opportunity to demonstrate and foster lessons in diligence, honesty, and faithfulness.  Teach with the end goal in mind.

Another key lesson they must learn is how to find information.  We cannot know everything, but if we know where to find information, we will succeed in our quest for knowledge.  Our children must learn how to think for themselves, becoming less dependent on us as the teacher of information.  They must learn to search for truth and to know when they have found it.  Foster a love of learning in their hearts and help them to develop a Christian world-view based on God's Word.

Do not sorrow for their struggles or difficulties.  Press on.  Learning perseverance and self-discipline is essential for a productive life.  Don't abandon them, but walk with them encouraging and exhorting them in their endeavors.  IF you walk away and leave them to their studies, they will find something more fun to do.  Stay with them as much as possible for the duration of the teaching time.

The clock is ticking, but instead of it becoming your enemy, embrace it as a reminder of the preciousness of your time together.

HOMESCHOOL RESOURCES:

When we began our homeschooling journey, there were few resources to help us get started.  We too struggled to find information, resources, and support for our journey.  Homeschooling is more mainstream today, and for that I am truly thankful.

Still, there are times when reading about another's journey and gathering from the experience of others can inspire and be a help in time of need.  To ask questions about homeschooling please contact me!
